The Republic of Somaliland’s entire national budget is $425 million, with the vast majority going to security services leaving very little for infrastructure and development. Twenty years ago, Somaliland’s third President Dahir Riyale Kahin said it was “whatever we could get” which was around $25 million. In 1991 after the long war for freedom, the budget was a mere $5 million! The nation was esstentially run on pure sacrifices and civic pride. From $5M to $25M to over $400M today — that’s Somaliland’s story of self-sufficiency and resilience. Thankfully there’s positive moves in US Congress: the Somaliland Economic Access and Opportunity Act (H.R. 7993) to remove the financial barriers and shackles holding us back, so we can access international banking and markets. The Chinese Select Committee also called on the State Department to treat Somaliland separate from Somalia on risk assessments which would help bring investments It’s time the UK also did its part and helped unlock Somaliland’s true potential instead of dumping hundreds of millions in Somalia for absolutely no return on investment
