Last weekend I went down a rabbit hole on defense… started with a simple question: how $KRKNF or @anduriltech actually build their systems.. then I went upstream.. and it clicked. For 30 years, defense was locked: $LMT $BA $RTX $NOC $GD. No new primes. No disruption. Then 2010s–2020s: $PLTR and @SpaceX had to fight just to participate. Lawsuits just to bid. Now? Different world. Anduril, Shield AI, $KTOS, $AVAV, Scale… backed by a16z, Founders Fund, 8VC. Real capital. Real programs. Real scale. But here’s what most investors miss: The shift isn’t just new players at the top. It’s what those systems depend on. Yes, everyone knows optics: $AAOI $LITE $COHR. But the real edge is further upstream inputs, materials, bottlenecks. The primes still own the surface. But the next cycle? It’s being built underneath them. Most investors are still staring at the surface. I’m not.
