Donald Trump has been a national politician for a decade. Anyone still reacting to the guy’s negotiating tactics and hyperbole with this sort of hysteria ten years in should be disqualified from political commentary. If he nukes Tehran at 8pm, I’ll admit I’m the crazy one. When he doesn’t, this crew will admit nothing and find some other comment to be scandalized by.
Bo Winegard@EPoe187

Ok this is legitimately a threat to annihilate an entire people, an obvious and grotesque war crime. There is absolutely no defense of this and it should lead to immediate impeachment and removal.

With how much the Anglosphere dominates Japan discourse, it’s easy to forget sometimes that the vast majority of foreigners here are other Asians. The average Chinese or Vietnamese person in Japan probably isn’t even posting on X. “Gaijin Twitter” is primarily a Western thing.

A simple #Kyodo news wire dispatch in Japanese today with one sentence stating Pres. #Trump is displeased with Japan and said “they wouldn’t help us“ has elicited an online firestorm of responses upwards of 650 Japanese. Using some tools I analyzed the reaction and I suspect this is fairly representative of many Japanese and if so,might begin to indicate a potential friction in US-Japan Relations: Findings: Upshot of average Japanese responses (based on the 685 replies to this Kyodo News post): The dominant sentiment is strong disapproval of Trump’s complaint today and frustration with what many see as US arrogance. Japanese users overwhelmingly view Japan’s decision not to provide military support (especially in the context of US actions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz) as the correct, law-abiding choice. They frequently criticize the Takaichi administration for “pandering,” spending 11 trillion yen, and making a high-profile US visit that achieved “zero results.” Common themes include: • Anger at him for demanding help while the US maintains bases in Japan, extracts “host-nation support” payments, and (in their view) started an illegal war. • Pride in Japan staying out of the conflict, often crediting Article 9 of the Constitution. • Calls for Takaichi to resign or for immediate elections. • A defiant “we don’t owe you anything” tone, with some noting that Trump also complained about South Korea, Australia, and NATO (so Japan isn’t being singled out). Overall, the replies reflect mainstream Japanese pacifist/anti-war sentiment on X: relief that Japan didn’t join what many call a “massacre,” irritation at US pressure, and criticism of the current government’s overly submissive diplomacy. The top replies (hundreds of likes each) are almost uniformly negative toward Trump and the ruling LDP’s approach. Here are 10 representative translated samples (chosen from the highest-engagement replies to reflect the breadth of the conversation; original Japanese authors are noted for context): 1. @LoneNyanko (576 likes)
“They won’t return Henoko. They attack Iran with a carrier home-ported in Yokosuka. Demand 11 trillion yen. Won’t send the SDF? ‘Japan didn’t help us’? Enough already. Because Takaichi is cozying up and offering tribute to Trump—the international-law-violating mass murderer—we’re being treated like ‘the rich subordinate.’ #TakaichiResign” 2. @baronpiyo (456 likes)
“Japan is on the verge of being destroyed by America. Do you understand the current situation?” 3. @dezHW3tQbKVg0Y2 (429 likes)
“You arbitrarily block the Strait of Hormuz and cut off Japan’s energy supply, then complain ‘Japan didn’t help us’? Huh? Get impeached already.” 4. @zackys (351 likes)
“The 11-trillion-yen offering and that creepy praise turned out to be a complete waste.” 5. @jyoshikikirai (235 likes)
“Immediate dissolution of the Takaichi administration! The US visit produced not even one millimeter of results. We’ve had enough of the ‘good wording’ or ‘peaceful-idiot’ evaluations! #MorningShow” 6. @ninomiyachikara (218 likes)
“This is Trump’s true feeling. He never took seriously a Japanese prime minister who gets all excited from flattery.” 7. @pqQISYRTbj8S02c (178 likes)
“The US has never helped Japan. Without the US we would still be the world’s top semiconductor power and an economic superpower. Quit messing with us. US, get out of Japan already.” 8. @Taaara1205 (132 likes)
“It’s not just Japan—he’s also griping about NATO, South Korea, and Australia. It just shows how isolated the US (President Trump) is in this war. Better not to pay it any mind.” 9. @djnobby (33 likes, but widely quoted)
“Trump actually said: ‘And it’s not just NATO. You know who else didn’t help us? South Korea didn’t help us. You know who else didn’t help us? Australia didn’t help us. You know who else didn’t help us? Japan.’ So headlines that make it sound like Japan alone was named are misleading.”…(continued) ⤵️

@ToriToruTori I don’t know you, so maybe you’re already doing this, but rather than just hoping, speaking to our friends and families, coming out and putting pressure on politicians is how we achieve this. I have a Japanese partner, we want to get married here in Japan. Let’s work together 🤍

@Zadski @Jalzen7 @Rothmus You did it disingenuously to try to undermine the point of the meme. Using male and female pieces in a building set to discredit homosexual relationships as “not working” is facetious and stupid. Like analogizing hetero relationships to hetero wheels in a bicycle.

@Jalzen7 @Rothmus No one said straight marriages are 100%, bruh. They obviously just couldn’t their shit out. If your dad had been gay tho, he’d likely still be married AND you probably would have been swallowed by his man. Wins all around 😂

There's a Japanese breakfast that the rest of the world hates. This. Hot rice. Raw egg. Soy sauce. Mix. Eat. It's called Tamago Kake Gohan — TKG. Literally: "Egg on Rice." The internet's reaction: "Raw egg? That's disgusting." "You'll get sick." "Absolutely not." Shut up and try it first. The egg melts into the hot rice, gets silky and creamy, and the soy sauce hits you with that perfect umami. Come to Japan and try it. It'll change your life.

@namaewo1111 Twitter is an extremely right-wing platform for Americans, not representative of the real population. I wish more Japanese people also knew that Elon is basically doing this to create more propaganda for products he’s releasing in Japan. He’s using your engagement to sell to you.

🚨HOLY SHIT: In Atlanta, Georgia, an entire airport terminal fell silent as hundreds suddenly started to pray. Moments like these remind us that our nations were built on Christian values. Christianity is on the rise globally. Happy Easter, everyone. 🙏

@Jane_Doe82 Some of these people are young, they’re going to be around for a while. Say Democrats and anyone opposed to Trump and MAGA wins, the midterms and next presidency, what are we supposed to do with ex-MAGA? Imprison them? Ignore them? What’s the play here?2/2

@Jane_Doe82 A lot of responses to this have been : “Nothing will change, not worth trying” or “they’ll vote for republicans anyway”. That isn’t true for all of them and we don’t need all of them, just enough to make sure they don’t win anymore. Besides what is the alternative? 1/

Isn't it interesting that Donald Trump unashamedly shares a great Christian Message on Easter and all the leaders who hate him around the world aren't sharing an Easter message?
