European Colonial Mentality Alive And Well We just thought that we should point out that Greenland doesn't 'belong' to Europe. It was colonised by Denmark from about 1721 when Hans Egede, a Norwegian priest and missionary with support from the united Dano-Norwegian crown, tried to convert the local indigenous Inuit inhabitants to Catholics. Denmark then - without consulting the Inuit - then claimed the land for themselves, mainly to secure whale hunting opportunities. Today, about 90% of Greenland today is populated by Inuit's - not Europeans. We think that Greenland should be given the opportunity to declare independence and let the Inuit decide amongst themselves what they should do. Greenland is not European - at all.
