We were honored to welcome military families to the #911Museum this weekend for a special day recognizing the #MonthOfTheMilitaryChild. Families gathered to connect, reflect, and experience meaningful programs designed to celebrate the strength and resilience of military children. Visitors heard powerful first-person stories of service and sacrifice, participated in hands-on art activities, and explored “Our Flag Was Still There,” a moving installation highlighting unity and endurance. Throughout the day, families enjoyed a service-themed story time, creative youth activities, and a guided Youth & Family Tour that sparked thoughtful conversations across generations. Thank you to all the families who joined us. We’re grateful to share this meaningful day with you. @TMFoundation @Tuesdayschldrn @NYCVeterans @NewYorkVeterans @DeptVetAffairs @CrisisCanines @TheHoldingFrames

From the Collection: Recovered World Trade Center identification card issued to Susan M. Bochino at Aon Group. Bochino was born and lived on Staten Island. In her free time, she went to movies and New York Yankees games. In the summer of 2001, Bochino joined Aon Corporation as a client specialist. She had told family she liked working one street away from her sister’s office, though she was nervous about being in a tall building. On 9/11, Bochino was at work on the South Tower’s 92nd floor. She was 36 years old. #911Museum

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Keiichiro Takahashi worked in London and Los Angeles before settling in Port Washington, Long Island, in 1989 with his wife, Harumi. Keiichiro kept a garden of Japanese herbs and vegetables. He also enjoyed watching science fiction films with his two grown children. A senior vice president at Euro Brokers, on 9/11, he was on the South Tower’s 84th floor. He was 53 years old. Today we placed a white rose at his name on the #911Memorial to mark his 78th birthday. #NeverForget911

The #911Memorial includes the names of the 2,983 people who were killed in the 2001 and 1993 terrorist attacks, grouped by the locations and circumstances in which victims found themselves during the attacks. Within these groupings, names are arranged in a system of “meaningful adjacencies.” Friends and colleagues appear together, as well as the crews of each of the four flights and first responder agencies and units. Additionally, during the Memorial’s development, victims’ next of kin were invited to request that their loved ones’ names be inscribed alongside specific others. In this way, those who were connected in life reside together on the Memorial.

Meet Miah Checo, Retail greeter volunteer. A high school senior from Brooklyn, Miah was drawn to volunteering because of her father, Nelson Checo, an NYPD Sergeant serving from 1990 to 2011. On September 11, 2001, Nelson was assigned to the Brooklyn South Warrant Squad, out of the 78th Precinct in Park Slope. After retiring from the NYPD, he joined the staff at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. In volunteering, Miah’s goal was to come of her shell by interacting with the thousands of people that visit the Museum every day. One year since she began volunteering here, she says her favorite part is the people. She loves to hear visitors’ stories and work alongside the welcoming and supportive Retail team. Her favorite story to share with visitors is that of paper cranes sent by children around the world to Rescue and Recovery workers and 9/11 families in the aftermath of the attacks. #GlobalVolunteerMonth

Throughout April, as we mark #MilitaryChildMonth, we honor the bravery and resilience of those children whose lives were forever changed by the conflicts that followed 9/11. Through their parents’ service in the Global War on Terror, they carry the weight of tremendous loss and sacrifice.

This #EarthMonth, we honor resiliency, growth, and healing. In the aftermath of 9/11, amid devastation and loss, nature quietly stood as a witness to grief and hope. Among the Ground Zero rubble, a single tree, later known as the #SurvivorTree, was unearthed, nurtured, and returned to its home at the #911Memorial. Its story reminds us that even in the hardest soil, life can take root. Trees have always been symbols of endurance and renewal. For the rescue and recovery community, they became places to pause, reflect, and find comfort together. Following the attacks, parks became communal spaces for mourning and remembrance, a reminder that our connection to nature brings us strength. This month and every month, may we pause to celebrate the Earth and its power to heal. Photo: The Survivor Tree being replanted on the 9/11 Memorial in 2010.
