Nine-year-old Tiernan McCready was walking home from football in Derry when he saw something that didn’t feel right. Nearby, three men were trying to force an 18-year-old girl into a van. Most people would have frozen in fear. Tiernan didn’t. Even though he was scared, the young boy started shouting and ran closer to the scene, drawing attention to what was happening. The sudden noise and interruption caused the men to panic and flee. The girl was able to escape. Tiernan then helped her get to safety and alerted his mother so the police could be called. Later, Tiernan admitted he had been frightened the entire time, but said he knew he could not just stand there and do nothing. Police praised the boy’s quick thinking and courage, saying his actions may have prevented a much more serious outcome. To recognize what he did, officers presented Tiernan with a badge of bravery. Despite the attention, the young boy remained humble and said he hopes to become a police officer one day so he can continue helping people. Sometimes the biggest acts of courage come from the smallest heroes.

Very sad to learn of the death of Len Deighton, who was one of the two greatest spy thriller writers of all time and in some regards was Le Carre’s superior. Anyone who has not read Deighton should try Funeral in Berlin, Bomber or SSGB. Most of all they should seek out Berlin Game, the start of an epic 10 book Cold War series focused on Bernard Samson. Deighton’s writing was sharp, satirical, gripping and often amusing. His office infighting in the intelligence services was delicious and his characters are beautifully drawn. The Samson cycle starts with a meticulously plotted run of five books (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, London Match, Spy Hook and Spy Line) which all stand alone but tell one big story from the jaded but dedicated perspective Bernard a brilliant field operative. Len’s genius idea was to use the sixth, Spy Sinker, to retell the whole cycle from the perspective of everyone else, exposing what Bernard didn’t know and misunderstood. There is then an origin story about Bernard’s dad during the war, Winter, and then a concluding trilogy of Faith, Hope and Charity, which is not as high quality but deals with the fallout from the events of books 1-5. It’s an epic achievement and the greatest long series in spy fiction, accepting that the Smiley series is the greatest short series. Do yourself a favour, give it a try

He lost 6 years of his life in prison for a rape that never happened. The accuser later admitted she made it up. Question: Should there be consequences for false accusations that send innocent people to prison?

@SimonDanczuk Dan hits the nail on the head here for me. Following his attacks on Johnson and his many calls for him to resign, Starmer placed honour and integrity at the heart of his offer to the British people and he has been found completely lacking in both!

This by Dan Hodges is correct in every detail. And the only conclusion anyone can reach is that Starmer has to go as Prime Minister, he’s not fit to do the job.
