@Mazzn1987_TRPG @excalipermx Yeah you clearly have no idea how hard it is to actually import from japan. My effort ls are worthless is there no legal pathway to buy. And no, the company isn't the artist, why do you insist on conflating them? No matter the will of the artist, the company have the final word

For that artist to earn a profit and be able to create their next work, there needs to be a path where legitimate products are purchased and those profits reach the artist through the company. If you love them, you should first make the effort to pay the artist. We have done exactly that through personal imports and specialized parallel import shops. Are you saying that was meaningless? You pay the company so that the company can properly compensate the artist. Why do you insist on separating the company from the artist? No matter how talented an artist may be, it's difficult to create great work without the company's resources — the development environment and team personnel. The company and the artist work in a cooperative relationship, and paying for the legitimate products the company sells is what ultimately leads to compensation for the artist. What you should be doing is making the effort to buy.

Revenege@Revenege42

@excalipermx Yes exactly. Although the other note is that we DO care about the creators. These discussions only come up when a work is killed, not when it's alive. Piracy of a work when it's being sold is frowned upon. We support your right to sell your art. Not the right to destroy it.

**TL;DR:** Cute joke, but it's a lie. I'm not trying to pick any fights nor anything, but it needs to be clarified this misconception that westerns don't want to pay for anime, manga or games. This is a complete mistake and we have history already to show this. 1. **Torrent usage** (the main tool for traditional piracy) is at historic lows as a share of internet traffic. 2. People avoid piracy because illegal sites are full of risky ads and poor experiences. 3. **Steam** has seen massive sales growth — reaching record revenue in 2025. 4. Unlicensed software usage continues to drop. Even with more internet users than ever, overall piracy site visits fell 5.7% in 2024 (to 216 billion). Good services like **Steam**, **Netflix**, and **Spotify** have greatly reduced piracy in their fields by offering convenient, affordable access. Manga is a clear exception. Legal options are still limited and often disappointing: - **Manga Plus** is growing but feels incomplete for many readers. - **K-Manga** faces complaints about translation quality and heavy censorship. So far we don't have a good enough quality for easy access and good pricing for the general public. This is why publishing piracy (driven mostly by manga, manhwa, and manhua) rose 4.3% in 2024 — while most other categories declined. Direct anti-piracy crackdowns by big companies have had limited global impact. The strongest evidence shows that **better legal services** are what actually reduce piracy. **Bottom line:** Yes, people want to pay for the services. No, if we have good services, the majority wont keep using piracy, it happened with movies and series, happened with anime and happened with games. Good Service lowers piracy more than any other action we saw in internet history so far. Below there are some other studies, but I didnt get too many of them because I assumed most people wouldnt read. They are not irrefutable evidence that Piracy is dying, but its many more studies showing a trend on what is actually working against piracy, which is good services and easier ways to purchase legal content. Now there are not many other studies saying otherwise. By the way, about your joke meme, if you want to mock westerns, don't put Japan into the "Wojack" position (that character you put the japanese flag), because this makes you look like you are mocking Japanese people yourselves.....

@kamosika3 @autopilotgod Hmmm, it depends on two factor i'd guess 1) is it only the book itself that is of bad quality or the translation too? 2) is it priced accordingly to its quality? If 1 and 2, i may buy but shelf it and still read the pirated version. If 1 only, prob won't buy. 1/2

@kamosika3 @autopilotgod Ok, juste to be sure, authentic product doesn't mean source material, right? I can relatively easily get mahou shoujo ni akogarete merch. I can barely get the manga, and even then it would be censored. It heavily depends on the serie and your country so i can't confirm nor deny it

@rptort I could understand the reputation argument, even if i can't think of a case where it happened. But i'm not sure how the second point affect the author. I mean, piracy is a issue yeah, but a service one, and most of the time "service" isn't in the hand of the author.

@kamosika3 @autopilotgod That's why i have few mangas at home, despite my love for them (2-3 book per series usually) but a litteral wall of gundams, figs and others official merch. I don't want a "better quality" product. I want an unaltered one without crazy overcharge.

@kamosika3 @autopilotgod Correct me if the translation missed some stuff I want to support creator financially. At the same time, i don't want to pay for service that doesn't respect their works, or are hellish to use. If i can't legally, i'll use piracy and save for merchs, cuz merch can't be altered 1/

When Steam was released video game piracy went down massively. When Spotify was released music piracy went down massively. Piracy is and will always be a service issue. Provide people a legal, convenient, accessible alternative if you don't want them to pirate.

@kamosika3 @autopilotgod Here's the thing. We do want to support financially the authors we like, but if there is no legal way, or it's utter shit (overcharging, twisting the translation, etc) and the pirate version actually respect the media. Then pirate it is. They can't ask for money or they can gtfo

@Mazzn1987_TRPG @excalipermx That's one reason out of 5. And i have to correct you, where i put passion is in the artist i love, why should i burn that in jumping throught hoops because the corpos doesn't want my money? Piracy take no effort, and cost nothing . Then when stuff release legally, i can buy it

It was the same for us back in the day. Even so, we found ways to save up money and bought them. It's only natural that imported goods are expensive. I can't understand why people who pour so much passion and effort into piracy suddenly lose all enthusiasm when it comes to finding a way to actually purchase things. All that's really there is simply the desire to get things cheaply, isn't it? For the record, I don't think piracy should be completely banned. It probably can't be, anyway. I'm simply saying: do it out of sight, with the awareness that you're doing something shady and dirty. Stop puffing out your chests, and stop blaming Japanese companies. If you spend the money and effort, you can obtain it legitimately. Don't pin your shortcutting on Japanese companies. You simply lack patience, that's all.

@Oranyaa_ The current argument over piracy is people doing it to the ATLA movie despite it being release on Paramount+. Every year the most pirated shows all have a legal avenue to obtain, the service excuse has, is, and will always be, a lie.

@Mazzn1987_TRPG @excalipermx Not sure what is supposed to be "parallel import",might be translation issue, but if you're talking about importing directly from japan, a lot of stuff is 1)geolocked 2)need a jp adress 3)need a jp card 4)won't ship oversea 5)insane shipping cost+custom 6) all of the above.

@rptort @RossCastro The one that boast about mot paying are the one that wouldn't have bought shit anyways. And a insignificant part of the issue here. The main thing i've seen thrown around by the jp side, is that piracy of content not being sold still represent a loss for the author. How?
