Intelligence from Yemen’s internationally recognized government shows that weapons stockpiles left behind by the UAE during its withdrawal from Yemen were looted, with some of the equipment eventually ending up in the hands of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, according to Intelligence Online. The abandoned caches, located primarily in Yemen’s Hadramawt Governorate, included reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, fiber-optic guidance components, infrared-guided missiles, mortar rounds, anti-aircraft guns, heavy machine guns, and various small arms. The UAE had maintained a major military presence in the region, including at Al-Rayyan Airport, before withdrawing its forces in late December and early January. Yemeni security forces have recovered some of the missing weapons, but significant quantities were smuggled out of Hadramawt, with portions sold to AQAP. Intelligence officials warn that Al Qaeda is attempting to reactivate dormant cells in the region. The group remains active in parts of southern Yemen, including Abyan and Shabwa, while its main stronghold is believed to be in the Abidah Valley in Marib Governorate.
