Prior to every investment, we build a financial model for the company for a variety of reasons - but one of them is to stress test the business. It's a good practice for any organization or business. Stress testing involves changing one variable in the assumptions of the business while holding everything else constant and seeing the magnitude of the impact to revenue growth, profitability, cash, etc. When you do this across different variables in the financial model, what you'll find is that the model is far more sensitive to changes in certain variables than others. Those become the key levers in the business to protect as you grow. If this year has taught us anything is that things can change. Universities are dealing with possible changes to funding and endowment tax rates. Product companies are dealing with dramatic tariff swings. Many companies are dealing with the impact of AI-native or AI-enabled alternatives. Etc. That's the value of stress testing the financial model early to understand which assumptions drive the model disproportionately and therefore need to be prioritized and protected.
