In the US he's no more relevant than any other boss from Megaman 2. But Japanese accounts on twitter seemed to react strongely to his inclusion in the Japanese Mcdonalds commercial.

@DashLilHog In the sega cd version of Earthworm Jim they included a cheat code that let you give jim a donkey kong mask with an arrow through the head, they did this because they felt that Donkey Kong's 3d graphics distracted from Earthworm Jim's hand drawn animation and lead to less sales
