The US built its entire post-war identity around being Europe’s indispensable protector. That role became load-bearing for American self-image, not just policy. Decades of cultural output built around the same story. America rides in. Saves the day. Europe is grateful.
Except Europe quietly outgrew the dependency. We unified, built our own institutions and became the world’s largest trading bloc. The US never updated the story.
So now when Europe doesn’t perform sufficient gratitude, it reads psychologically as abandonment. Which produces exactly what we’re seeing with MAGA, frothy- mouthed rage, threats, punishment behaviour.
The most powerful nation on earth, having a nervous breakdown all because Europe shrugged.
