Congratulations to Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun on being named the recipient of the 2025 Gershon Iskowitz Prize 👏 Drawing on Northwest Coast design traditions and infusing them with vivid colour, his paintings offer a searing critique of settler land use and resource extraction—while imagining new futures shaped by Indigenous knowledge and resilience. “It’s been my life’s goal to portray the negative and positive realities of this world,” Yuxweluptun stated in 2016. “I’m interested in recording history: residential schools, global warming, deforestation, and pollution... If you only allow colonialists to record history, they record it to their own glorification. I wanted to take the position of power, of historical painting, and put it into my own hands—take possession of history.” 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 (𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦) is currently on view in Early Days, proposes a vision of nature’s power and humanity’s place within it. The painting evokes the vibrant beauty of a BC landscape charged with cultural resonance, a world in which colonial violations have been transcended and the natural order restored. Yuxweluptun says that his title “refers to a change in social climate, rather than the literal climate.
