@Tom_Rowsell Because they had to, their construction was so much more primitive than ours! Reinforced concrete is a miracle. Auguste Perret was the first architect to use reinforced concerete, had a very classical education yet even he thought it was too beautiful to be covered.

Brutalism refers to unfinished concrete (béton brut) so by definition, this cannot be brutalism. Pretty tired tbh honestly people calling everything brutalist which in reality is "structural expressionism maybe". The term "brutalism" is pretty icky anyways, it was never really...
Cairo Smith@cairoasmith

There's a common misconception that Brutalist buildings were unpainted, but thanks to microscopic analysis of the exteriors we can now recreate what they looked like in their prime.

@NewLeftEViews I think it's mostly native [Continental Europeanese] speakers publishing more frequently in English, but yeah. I generally sympathize with his bibliometric stuff but he's way off on this...

All you are documenting here is that English language scholars in the humanities, especially stateside, are deeply insular and tend not to read in other languages and those who do can make a career by 'discovering' thinkers and arguments decades later.
Phil Magness@PhilWMagness

Carl Schmitt enthusiasts (and particularly Postliberals) depict him as a "giant" of 20th century political theory. Despite this claim, Schmitt was almost entirely ignored in the English-speaking world until the early 2000s. We now have clear empirical evidence of this fact.

@VakarisSan Putting Slovenia and Croatia in different categories is defendable, but kinda rubs me the wrong way because of Habsburg and Yugo heritage. One could nooooooancepost about the exact CE/EE border wrt PL, UA and BY but since you worked with whole countries, your solution is correct.

@VakarisSan Lithuanian and parts of Latvia (Latgale) CE, with EE influence. The rest of Latvia and Estonia NE with EE influence. The map NEEDS a "Balkan" or Southeastern-European category. Romania in CE is defendable, but can pretty much equally go Balkan or EE.

@olivertraldi This was always standard in Hungarian history courses and almost certainly every other part of a humanities department.

I've been doing in-class essay exams for years. It was always a great mode of assessment. Very common in undergrad philosophy classes. I will probably replace papers with oral exams, or add oral paper defenses.
Dana Goldstein@DanaGoldstein

With student A.I. use/abuse now ubiquitous, professors and teachers are killing off take-home essays and papers. Students are writing inside the classroom, often by hand. It's part of the big rethink happening on tech and learning. My new report here: nytimes.com/2026/04/30/us/…

@adb0wen Is there a good article explaining why the British are so opposed to Schengen? It always baffled me.

@_DRF96 @olivertraldi the title was an editorial decision. some people think it works, but i was in favour of alternatives. however, i explicitly critique the term "Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory" in the first few pages and advise readers against dismissing others as conspiracy theorists

@_DRF96 @olivertraldi nah, i'm pretty on clear on what people mean by 'cultural marxism' - and, often, they mean different things!

@Ziggydank The joke is that you don't even need to claim stupid things like this to prove that Belarusians were important in the Lithuanian state, even though they weren't the titular nation. It's obvious.

@Chud_Slovak1848 @ApuAzertArja 2. Felvidék was never the official name of any administrative unit AFAIK, it is a geographic term. If you want to stop Hungarians from using "felvidék", you will have to remove the mountains somehow. :)

@Chud_Slovak1848 @ApuAzertArja 1. Some Hungarians refer to every territory that went to Romania as "Erdély", which is incorrect, since it also includes territories that weren't part of the historically administratively distinct Erdély.

Magyar Péter (Ne féljetek)@magyarpeterMP

I held a personal meeting in my office with László Gubík, President of the Hungarian Alliance — the organisation representing the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. I informed him of the details of my phone call with Slovak Prime Minister @RobertFicoSVK. I emphasised that the TISZA government is committed to supporting the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. We consider it unacceptable that Slovak law threatens with imprisonment those who criticise the Beneš Decrees and runs counter to fundamental EU values. We also reject the confiscation, without compensation, of land belonging to Slovak citizens of Hungarian origin. I stressed that, under a TISZA government, acquired rights will be preserved, and that protecting the interests of the Hungarian minority will remain at the centre of efforts to further strengthen Hungarian–Slovak relations. At the same time, I made it clear to the President that we expect fundamental changes in the transparency and efficiency of the use of funds from Hungary, and that we will not tolerate Slovak–Hungarian media outlets financed by Hungarian state support spreading Fidesz propaganda. I also told the President that a TISZA government will launch a review of the use of Hungarian state support over the past ten years. I gladly accepted the President’s invitation. I hope to visit our Hungarian brothers and sisters in Felvidék later this summer.

@ApuAzertArja @Chud_Slovak1848 Not quite. There is a large overlap, but the Mátra would usually be included, while nobody in their right mind would call Csallóköz/Žitný ostrov "Felvidék". (same applies to "Erdély" but that's a different story)

@muratkaryan First proper ethnic census of the Kingdom of Hungary was made in 1784. (pic below) Anything made prior to that is a speculation at best, made possible by incomplete tax-records & nationalist academics, drawing sharp ethnic borders on densly populated areas (Uplands, for example.)
