School is much more advanced today, Kindergarten is what 1st grade used to be, 4th grade math is like what used to be 6th grade, etc.
Many boys cope better with this if "red shirted."

Half of my sons Kindergarten class turned six the first few weeks of class. No advantage when everyone is doing it. Some of these kids get held back again for 9th grade. So they will be almost 20 when they graduate. Just more adolescence extension is all this is.

A striking example is that the US Civil War was an insane catastrophe *even as a method of ending slavery*. How many Americans know that Britain ended slavery by passing a tax and buying out tbr slave owners so they didn't viciously resist?

It sounds like pedantry, but the actual slave experience varied tons by time and place. According to Fogel, slaves on US tobacco or cotton plantations had living standards close to free farm workers. Caribbean sugar plantations and South American silver mines were hell on earth.
