@Plankton445140 @rhobotmeat @nixcraft Good thing we have rsyslog with log files of the errors...*woosh* nope, now we have journald and no log files.

@rhobotmeat @nixcraft Systems replaces the simple scripts that were supposed to ensure that like nginx or kde are actually running, only in a more indirect and convoluted and hard to audit and easy to break way.

systemd lost the plot a long time ago. they stopped following the Unix philosophy and now they're busy adding nonsense like age verification. Just like Firefox, systemd doesn't understand its core user base. There are plenty of distros without systemd

@rhobotmeat @nixcraft Systemd basicly extends itself to make really complicated versions of what where simple things that never broke. And now they break, and are hard to debug.

@nixcraft So, as a newer Linux user... systemd is the thing that ensures that, like, nginx on my server, or KDE on my laptop are actually running and configured. So... _how can it_ have an age verification system?

@Senninsage Most people (excluding mac fanclub) have more devices with linux than Windows. Also use them a lot more. Even if you type this on a Windows pc, your router, phone and possibly nas (although could be Freebsd)in you home are running linux. Not to mention a lot of smart devices..

People already use Windows far more than macOS and Linux, and they do so by choice. Windows can improve, but it's lightyears better than either Linux or MacOS.
Zac Bowden@zacbowden

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

@baclofino @CR1337 A deb package is a directory with at minimal a DEBIAN/control file, and you run dpkg-deb <directory> and you have a package. You can also download (in the case the kernel) package, make the edit, compile and make the deb again, no magic involved.

@bofromhell @CR1337 Try to change ONE kernel config setting in Debian or Fedora. In Arch you clone the PKGBUILD, edit checksum and config, makepkg -Ccfi done. I scripted a bunch even to roll along with my changes. Hacking-friendly. Doing same in DEB/RPM is a nasty exercise with their package tooling

@baclofino @CR1337 Wait what? I havent touched rpm in a while, but you can for sure make debs without age verification, make sure they are a newer version and put them in your own apt repo. But you have to remake these with every update of the package

@CR1337 Arch PKGBUILD makes it easy to patch out stuff added by systemd that you do not want. Like disable homed. DEB/RPM-based distro users on the other hand are royally fscked, because of overengineered and impenetrable packaging in 2026.

@JacquesBoon @AaronAmarok Same in the Netherlands, if you do not manage to learn stick you get a disabled license that says you can only drive automatic. I love the "lekker" typo

@AaronAmarok More so it's weird that Americans complain about it. Don't they have like absurdly large stretches of road to drive on? You end up on 4 or whatever is the highest gear depending on speed limits and don't touch the shifter for next hour.

@Moonlight_myths Genetics are weird, i look nothing like my parents, more like some of my uncles and aunts from both sides. Including the red hair. Got spatial awareness from grandpa, even though it skipped an entire generation on all of his kids.

My sister gave birth to a red-haired daughter. But she and her husband are both dark-haired. No one in our family has red hair. My sister insists that her husband's great-grandfather was red-haired, and that's how it was passed down. Her husband didn't believe her, especially since she has this one red-haired colleague at work. Anyway, he insisted on a DNA test, which they did after huge fights and screaming matches. My sister threw the paper in his face. It showed 99.9% he's the father. But he still doesn't believe it, says the test could have been faked or someone paid off the lab. He wants to do another one at a different lab, but my sister is afraid this will definitely lead them to divorce He's not even talking to my sister right now. But he says it's better to find out the truth and live with a clear conscience. He doesn't want to raise someone else's child. I believe my sister 100%, but I have to admit the situation is pretty bizarre. Does anyone know anything about genetics?
