Proponents of the bill argue that the salary for what is considered a part-time legislature are insufficient. that it is difficult to secure some outside employment because the General Assembly meets 90-days of each year.

This bill would not just allow counties to hire lawmakers who do not currently work for them. It would allow the state to do the same.

A second senator from the same county was also ordered to give up a government job in the same county. He filed a lawsuit in January against the ethics committee but withdrew it when he lost a fight to obtain a temporary restraining order
