Instagram’s AI Recovery System May Have Just Been Outsmarted by AI 1/ 🚨 Instagram reportedly faced a major account takeover exploit. And the scary part? The attack didn’t rely on passwords, malware, or sophisticated hacking tools.

10/ 🛡️ Lessons for users: ✔️ Enable 2FA ✔️ Secure your email account ✔️ Remove sensitive public information ✔️ Keep backup recovery methods updated ✔️ Don’t rely solely on facial verification

9/ 📈 This is bigger than Instagram. Any platform relying heavily on: * Facial verification * Automated recovery flows * AI-based identity checks Needs to consider the reality of AI-generated personas.

8/ 🤯 Think about what’s happening here. One AI system generates a fake identity. Another AI system validates it. And humans may never be involved until after the damage is done.

7/ 🔥 The most concerning part? The victim may then enter an automated recovery loop: * Chatbot support * Automated responses * Limited or no human escalation Meanwhile, the attacker controls the account.

6/ ⚠️ Step 4: The verification system is allegedly fooled. If the AI accepts the generated video as authentic: ✅ Recovery request approved ✅ Recovery email changed ❌ Original owner locked out

5/ 🎭 Step 3: AI fights AI. The attacker: * Downloads the target’s public photos * Uses generative AI to create a realistic moving selfie/video * Submits it as verification proof No stolen credentials required.

4/ 🤖 Step 2: Instagram requests selfie verification. The platform uses AI to verify identity through a selfie video. The goal is to confirm the person requesting access is the real owner.

3/ 🪪 Step 1: The attacker initiates account recovery. * Clicks “Forgot Password” * Claims the account was hacked * Uses a VPN matching the victim’s region Nothing unusual so far.
