Adding alkalinity to wastewater as a CO₂ removal (#CDR) strategy shifts CO₂ to carbonate and bicarbonate, potentially decreases CO₂ flux to the atmosphere. 👀

💧 The data is in: May 2024 was the moistest May on record for the planet...
This continues a run of record-moist months that dates back to last year.
🤔 Wondering why it's been really rainy where you are?
65% of Earth had above normal moisture content during the month, which is being strongly influenced by excessive ocean heat across the global tropics, whereby the jet stream transports warmth and moisture out of the tropics and toward the poles. The tail end of El Niño and record global ocean heat content contributed to regional rainfall extremes, like those experienced in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, southern Brazil, the U.S. Gulf Coast, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji during May.
Regional dry patches can and do still exist, forced by other oscillations and modes, but recently they have been more of the exception rather than the rule. The western U.S., Mexico, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, parts of southern Australia, and eastern Europe were dry zones during May.
⚠️ In my opinion, this moistening trend is just as important as the warming trend as it relates to the potential increase in flood frequency and/or intensity into the future.
🌋 Note: the anomalies shown here are indicative of tropospheric patterns where the vast majority of the atmosphere's water is located and not the stratosphere where the Tongan volcanic moisture anomalies were most pronounced. Extra water vapor in the stratosphere can contribute to a slight warming effect on the ground, but it doesn't come back to the ground in the form of massive dumps of rain. While the eruption led to a substantial wetting of the stratosphere, very little water vapor exists there to begin with. Despite a large percent increase in water vapor there, actual amounts remain very small.
TY @SenatorHarckham for passing S9658, establishing the New York road salt reduction council & the New York road salt reduction advisory committee. Excessive road salt application is contaminating our waters & we must take action! @riverkeeper 🤝 @adk_council
@russ_owl You should report your observation. As an endangered species, sturgeon deaths are tracked and sometimes investigated. dec.ny.gov/nature/animals…
🎉 Big win for holding railroads and oil tankers accountable! The Assembly just passed @PatriciaFahy109's A9213A, strengthening our oil spill fund protections and ensuring responsible parties have sufficient liability coverage in the case of a catastrophic disaster. @riverkeeper
🎉 Today we celebrate the anniversary of the Hudson 7
The coalition, formed with guidance from #Riverkeeper in 2018, helps protect and improve #waterquality for over 100,000 residents sourcing drinking water from the #HudsonRiver 🌊

Yesterday, #RainReadyNY passed the Senate unanimously, 60-0, demonstrating the consensus our coalition has built this legislative session. With the legislative session closing next week, we urge the @NYSA_Majority to put A.9435 to a vote. @riverkeeper
@russ_owl Similar color to wisteria, which I’m also seeing lately. I wonder if I’ve mistook some some empress for wisteria now. I’ll look more closely.
Empress trees (Paulownia tomentosa) are in bloom right now. It’s an invasive species that thrives in disturbed areas, crowding out important native plants that should play that role. Still, i gotta admit it is cool to see old rockslides on the palisades lit up in these colors
Report nurdles - plastic pellets the size of orzo - that you see along the Hudson. They may be the result of a February train derailment that spilled the plastic waste into the Hoosic River, a Hudson tributary. Here's how to spot and report: riverkeeper.org/blogs/water-qu…@riverkeeper
Members of the Caucus came together with environmental justice advocates and other lawmakers to demand that the EPA addresses the "forever chemicals" (PCB) contaminatimg the Hudson River. #ADemandForJustice
@AlecMacGillis We had to keep notes early on and I’ve lost memory of a couple neighbors I don’t see often, but we know at least a dozen, and spend time with several of them.
Something I've been struck by in recent reporting: how often people don't know the names of their next- door neighbors, even in rowhouses, right smack next door to each other, and in cases when both families have been there at least a couple years.
