@LauraEWebsterr If concerned about low incomes and lack of affordability (and we should be), then give people income! Don't fuck with the price system that signals relative scarcity and abundance (for both producers and consumers). Econ 101

@LauraEWebsterr No, it's a recipe for empty shelves. A producer has the option to supply shops in Scotland and elsewhere. Prices capped below market value in Scotland, then clearly they won't supply here. Madness, and really puts me off voting SNP.

This is a great policy announcement because: 1) it's actual action on cost of living, not vague pledges to "tackle" it (eg Labour) 2) the furious reaction from the right exposes that the people who claim to be on the side of regular folk mainly care about shareholder's profits
The National@ScotNational

The SNP have pledged to cap prices on up to 50 essential food items if re-elected 👇 #Echobox=1776333537-1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thenational.scot/news/26026228.…

@PaulJSweeney The Vestas thing seems very nebulous though: where "in Scotland", and when??

The goal of the Chinese-state owned Ming Yang wind turbine factory plan was to undermine Europe's wind turbine industry, costing thousands of jobs and billions of Euros in wealth, just like what is happening to European automotive manufacturing. Denmark's Vestas has just agreed to build a wind turbine nacelle and hub factory in Scotland, which was negotiated in return for the UK blocking Ming Yang. The EU has made it clear to the UK Government that any deepening of our trade partnership is conditional on blocking the Ming Yang trojan horse. Swinney and the SNP claim to be committed pro-Europeans and aspire to join the EU as a member state. They are industrial and geopolitical hypocrites that trample over all reason in search of a grievance.
Michael Shanks MP@mgshanks

The first responsibility of any government is national security. John Swinney has sought to play politics with that security in recent days. To set the record straight I have offered to arrange a security briefing so that he can fully understand the reasons behind the decision.

@AscendedYield Hard asks (she was never doing this) 1/ Concede that Scotland voted for devolution, and grant it. 2/ Return nationalised industries to municipalities where they came from, not privatisation (unless local gov. wanted that). 3/ Don't do right to buy. They're not national gov homes!

@PaulJSweeney I often agree with you, but this just seems partisan. And it's not "dumping" if it's manufactured in Scotland! Dumping is overly cheap exports. These would be scottish made (to a chinese design) ☹️

I'm pleased that the UK Government has taken a strategically sound decision to protect Europe's wind turbine manufacturing base from Chinese dumping. Meanwhile, the Scottish Government subsidises Chinese firms to dump even more electric buses, undermining our manufacturing base.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

Deeply disappointed that the UK Labour government has blocked Ming Yang’s investment in our renewables industry - putting up to 1500 Scottish jobs at risk. At the very moment we should be building clean energy, they are sabotaging Scotland’s industrial future.

One of the biggest boosts to Scottish economic growth would be to get Glasgow's population density back up to European levels. There is more than 3 million square feet of unused floorspace in Glasgow city centre alone 👇🏻
George Marshall@GJMarshy

I promised a Europe vs UK comparison. 👇Here it is 🤯The difference in central density between Paris & London is striking. The other massive stand out is Brussels vs the likes of Manchester/Birmingham.

@luca_repetto_c You keep mentioning "British". You know your maps have cut out a lot of Britain though and only show England?

What are the effects of large human-capital shocks on innovation? In a new paper, we study how WWI military deaths across British communities affected local invention over the next decades. We find that places that lost more young men became persistently less innovative. (🧵1/11)

'Mazin'. Apparently @GeorgeMonbiot believes this: "Renewables are highly competitive and, for this reason, low-profit. Fossil fuels are uncompetitive and high profit." The thing that is cheaper to produce, which sells at the same price, is less profitable? 'Stonishin' ignorance.

@worstall @garrethmcdaid Just talking about the end state, not the means of getting there. Some people seem to believe that a wealthy world will be one in which they effectively have servants. Economically illiterate

@dcomerf @garrethmcdaid Sure, but as with the way that we did away with house servants. We want to make other jobs more attractive to those doing them, not make doing the jobs themselves expensive.

@Lewis334_ @Johnmilton124 @ScotRail Fair enough, Rutherglen wouldn't work without temporary platforms on the main line. But there are trains from the west that can't get to Central, and trains from the East that can't get to Central. Just run east to west missing out central.

@dcomerf @Johnmilton124 @ScotRail Genuinely what's your plan to run trains to Rutherglen? It's off the mainline which would involve a double turn back at a station which already has 6tph each direction. Newton is 4tph with one siding and even then drivers aren't likely trained for that line.

@Johnmilton124 @ScotRail Not just to paisley gilmore st. Look at the lines that exist: they could run to Rutherglen or Newton. We should create a temporary station at Shields depot for onward transport to the city centre via the subway from Shields rd

Forwarding a comment from Paul Stallan via Sarah. I find little to disagree with here, though i know many would say ‘how are we going to get there’? Glasgow had so much going for it, i do believe we do well in many ways, the occasional stumble is understandable.

@worstall @ChristineKayNow @GeorgeMonbiot That's not the reason. Per unit electricity generated, renewables cheaper. But when renewables generate, the price that their output can be sold for falls to zero. Fossil fuels can vary their supply so that they sell when the price is high. Hence higher cost AND more profitable.

@ChristineKayNow @GeorgeMonbiot The answer is people ignoring the capital costs of the renewables. Which are large, which is why they ignore them. You can get any result you like if you ignore reality, obviously.

The city centre stretch of the M8 takes up 360,000m2. That's roughly 50 city centre blocks of space, or equivalent to the city centre of Inverness.

Glasgow Central will not reopen this week, Network Rail has just said. It must wait for the fire service and city council to check the safety of the burnt out Union Corner building before it can check the station for damage. However, the low level station will reopen tomorrow.
