Next consultation event: Wednesday 4 March 2026, 10am to 5pm Woodside Halls, 36 Glenfarg Street, Glasgow, G20 7QE Pls support option 3 and suggest removal of motorway and replacement with an multi-modal transport corridor for local traffic and restoration of lost urban grid
Remove the M8@ReplacetheM8

Today, ask Transport Scotland to test a long term option for the central M8 that turns the route into an attractive urban street and opens up the land taken up by the motorway to housing, parks and development transport.gov.scot/news/public-in…

Just realised option 2 is remove + rebuild. And option 3 is remove + nothing. Let's make option 3 remove + improve

There is nothing stopping this being rebuilt. When you tour round Europe, specially those cities heavily bombed in WW2, a lot of the old buildings were rebuilt to look the same and benefit from modern plumbing, leccy, and fire safety.

A before and after shot of the Union Corner Building in central Glasgow. The upper shot was taken in 2025, the lower one this morning, showing how little of it remains standing following Sunday's fire. #glasgow #unionstreet #fire #architecture #architecturephotography

@MarkMelon You're a bit out of date here. The M74 was completed a decade or so ago and is an similarly direct motorway doing the same job. Speed creates emissions through tyre abrasion. It might not work, we might be stuck with this 60s monster but let's test option before spending 500m

@ReplacetheM8 Well if we don’t have the M8, they would still be travelling through the city, more slowly, generating more emissions. Do you think that people on the west coast don’t deserve goods and services being delivered to where they live?

@ReplacetheM8 How do you propose transporting goods and people from Central Scotland to the West of Scotland with no M8? Where do you want the lorries to go? I’m pretty sure that San Francisco doesn’t have one main road like the M8, so it’s not a like for like comparison.

@ifellonithonest boulevard. Or similar good neighbour urban street. Think San Francisco. Their massive elevated road came down in an earthquake. There wasn't carnage and they upgraded a street to a boulevard. Investment shot up ? Just want it tested. Might not work. But might

The city centre stretch of the M8 takes up 360,000m2. That's roughly 50 city centre blocks of space, or equivalent to the city centre of Inverness.

@PBC174 Then fill in the consultation. It's an expensive option though, up to £500m (obviously a lot more than that) with the same ongoing maintenance costs and a lifespan of 50 years. Or we could build a high capacity attractive boulevard or similar for a 1/5 the cost.

We simply want Transport Scotland to thoroughly test the remove viaduct option PLUS model a C21st best practice corridor . It's the cheapest, it could open up development land, reconnect communities. Let's see if it works like it does elsewhere.

@OssianLore Just responding to a question on area with an old tweet. Someone asked how much area the woodside viaduct covered. Very rough measure here.

@DavidHTower @SPMS1798 Sorry. What this means is an attractive urban street that carries cars and public transport. It's also a pleasure to walk and cycle along because it's lined with trees and buildings and isn't too noisy or polluted. Lots of cities are moving towards that from 1960s freeways

@Bhoys1888Ghirl @FundilyMundelly @joel_ca_c This account never insults people. Everyone approaches this topic because they care for Glasgow in different ways and has ideas about how to improve or support the city. We don't have all the answers but we do want @transcotland to thoroughly test a working option 3.

@themajorityscot That photo is from one of the many successful elevated freeway removal projects around the world. The example above is specific to Korea but economic, livability, investment, image improvements happened there, as with the rest.

@FundilyMundelly @joel_ca_c cycle, bus or train - always easier, quicker, more direct. But driving to the north of the centre from southside would use the M8 - and would use replacement roads on same corridor in any future scenario where motorway becomes a local boulevard-type road

@joel_ca_c @ReplacetheM8 I don’t disagree, but it’s not as simple as if you close it they won’t come. Out of curiosity, what’s your commute? (I don’t have one anymore, so it doesn’t matter to me.)

@FundilyMundelly @joel_ca_c Nothing is about to happen. Again, we just want options tested in case there is a better option out there than endlessly propping up the crumbling concrete - which has been the approach with zero consultation to date.

@FundilyMundelly @joel_ca_c You're not considering the volume of local journeys that would use the new corridor through the city. Many of whom would use bus or cycle it now that's it been redesigned to 21st Century standards. You are imagining nothing in it's place

@McSorleyWilliam Transport Scotland as an organisation have said that today, they would NEVER build a motorway through the centre of Glasgow. It's an anachronism from a different era. From the era that wanted to demolish Glasgow and start again. We want a 21st century corridor to be proud of

@ReplacetheM8 But that's your ultimate ambition to close part of the m8 in the city centre. Our city's transport network is a shambles and an embarrassment. The whole of Glasgow knows the metro project is never going to happen. The m8 is our biggest transport asset for the whole city. 1/2
