Next consultation event: Wednesday 4 March 2026, 10am to 5pm Woodside Halls, 36 Glenfarg Street, Glasgow, G20 7QE Pls support option 3 and suggest removal of motorway and replacement with an multi-modal transport corridor for local traffic and restoration of lost urban grid
Remove the M8@ReplacetheM8

Today, ask Transport Scotland to test a long term option for the central M8 that turns the route into an attractive urban street and opens up the land taken up by the motorway to housing, parks and development transport.gov.scot/news/public-in…

@RuairiKelly_ The main driver is referring to the stadium - a totally different use with a layout fit for it's purpose. This layout is less fit for purpose as a residential place. Too much height and density and too expansive an open space. Not Glasgow. This is 1950s soviet place making.

@ChasingHaggis What's stupid about testing options before committing to the one which is most successful? What is stupid is throwing money at something that is failing in multiple ways, just because you've thrown so much money at it already.

Council backs option 3 "remove"! This is the option that could repair the city and heal the scar. Now we need the best professionals to work with the City and, most importantly, the people of Glasgow who will use the route, to get it right. glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/26103805.…

@tamforrester You would drive through the city centre then. The connection isn't being closed in any scenario. It just wouldn't be a motorway on a concrete megastructure. Bypass traffic would go via the M73. Locals would drive through the centre

@Ps95v7 @newglasgowsoc This is a Transport Scotland owned piece of infrastructure. The Council is not involved. But the council does want options explored which are better for the city in the long term. What city would want a polluting, noisy, space hungry traffic sewer in its city centre.

@BytewareAI @zexpe In that option it wouldn't be 'a major motorway' anymore. It would be a high capacity city street connecting to motorways it's about character. But if the next stage of the project - options testing - shows it doesn't work, then we accept it. But lets see.

@ReplacetheM8 @zexpe Urban repair? What the actual fuck are you on about? That section of motorway needs rebuilt. Simple. You cant just have a break in a major motorway whers the fuck do you think the cars will go?

@BytewareAI @B_W_Marshall It's not insane to give professionals the opportunity to test a variety of options before committing to one. Rhas all that's happening here. If it doesn't work without viaducts then that will come out through the next stage of the project - more detailed design work

@gensynergy They're just asking for an option to be viability tested! That's the stage we are at. The next stage will carry forward options and test them in detail. If all these routes can't meet at St G X and function without a viaduct then we have to accept it. But let's see.

@ReplacetheM8 Its not a scar is a important route that 10s of thousands use daily. Clowns are in charge of GCC.

@tamforrester It might not be possible without bridges. It's a really complex challenge but at this stage it is simply testing options. If it isn't possible then we will have to accept the option that works.

@yetiayrshore ...the option to ‘remove’ the M8 Woodside Viaduct could be consistent with the council’s position... to fully understand the nature of this opportunity, its feasibility and what alternatives and significant investment would be required to unlock transformational benefits.”

@B_W_Marshall That's not in the scope of this project. But eventually maybe it would make sense to replace it with a low level bridge that everyone can use

@onlythekeeperta @zexpe Well actually yes it is, in all scenarios the link will be cut for years. And in all scenarios something will be put back in its place which will take traffic.

@zexpe @ReplacetheM8 It's not going to happen. it's a 'tick box' exercise from Transport Scotland. A section of major Trunk Road carrying several hundred thousand vehicles per day is just not going to disappear in the middle of a city.

@zexpe It'll be a national scale project. It will be too big to fail because of the councils budget. The land is owned by the nation not the city.

@ReplacetheM8 I fear without any joined-up thinking though we'll be left with another lost decade: Transport Scotland remove the viaduct, then the Council spends another 5 years debating what to replace it with and then decides it has no money... can't trust a decision without a concrete plan.

Junction 17 of the M8 is going to remain closed for at least 6 years... it only took them 2 years to build it in the first place back in 1969...

@zexpe Little too early for a concrete plan seeing as we are in the early stages of a consultation led by Transport Scotland who will ultimately decide. But there are lots of strategies if you're up to th challenge of navigating the website glasgow.gov.uk/media/6940/Cit…

@HowardPidge No it won't. Once a historic building is lost it's gone forever. But we know how to build good buildings and we know what appropriate urban design for the city would be. Th area will need a masterplan to guide development and it needs to be citizen-powered.

@zexpe It will have to be replaced with something. And thats the most exciting part of it. There is space for A LOT - it must include transport but it must also include urban repair. The council knows the potential.

@ReplacetheM8 Do you actually expect the council to replace it with anything though? Or will they just assume that it will result in less car use, as per their aims, such that the existing alternative infrastructure can cope? PS: I'm confused, are you for ReplacetheM8 or RemovetheM8? 😜
