It's not "artificial" intelligence, it's human intelligence. It is the collective knowledge of humanity, produced by countless generations of people, anyone who has ever published a text or created an image, as well as their teachers and their teachers' teachers. And as such, it is difficult to imagine a clearer-cut case for collective ownership and democratic public control. But instead our collective product is hoovered up virtually for free by a few capitalist firms and their billionaire owners to enhance the profits and power of a few, with potentially existential consequences for all of us and zero democratic oversight.

This was one of the of most insane monopolization schemes I've ever uncovered: Two secretive European companies rolled up every alternative supplier of egg-laying hens to American egg producers between 2010 and 2021—and have spent the past three years cashing in: raising hen prices on the back of high egg prices, throttling the supply of hens to egg producers to keep shortages going, and extracting billions in windfall profits along the way.

Can't even describe how much I hate what AI has done to the process of grading student work. I hate finding it, I hate the paranoia it fosters, I hate the confrontations with students who have used it. Nothing else in my experience has ever changed my job this much for the worse

This is just false. Eggs are cheap and plentiful in most of the world *without* resort to the extreme factory farming the U.S. egg industry has adopted. Talking heads who know nothing about agriculture should just sit this one out.

To lower prices, 99% of eggs are factory farmed. But packing many birds into a small space allows disease to easily spread and even cross into humans. Cheap eggs are a trade-off and one of the trade-offs is disease-caused supply shocks. Happy to answer other questions!!

These trends of unsustainable crop prices and farm input costs that automatically go up and down with crop prices so you can never make any money —they’re presented to farmers as just facts of life, when they’re absolutely not. Life wasn’t like this until we stopped enforcing the antitrust laws in the 1970s/1980a.
