Went to @HDFC_Bank today to open a new account. Had all documents + funds ready. The manager asked what I do. I said I trade futures. He didn’t even know what that is, confused it with forex, and refused to open my account saying it’s “not legal.” Futures & Options trading is completely legal and regulated in India by Securities and Exchange Board of India. Forex trading is restricted in India (only allowed via approved exchanges), but that’s not even what I do. Crazy that someone responsible for opening bank accounts doesn’t understand basic financial instruments. Absolutely disappointing experience.
