I was scheduled for multiple media interviews today, but I canceled all of them. Yesterday, after my interviews I felt drained and realize I need time to recover. I’ve been dealing with headaches, dizziness and lightheadedness and was informed by a doctor that I do have a concussion. Typically I try to work as hard as possible to bring coverage to a story, but this has also been a difficult subject for me to have to rewatch and recount. Michael P. Murphy stands as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unbreakable duty. During the War in Afghanistan, he became the first Navy SEAL to receive the Medal of Honor, and the first member of the U.S. Navy to earn it since the Vietnam War. On June 28, 2005, in the unforgiving mountains of Kunar Province, Afghanistan, Murphy led a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team during Operation Red Wings. Alongside him were Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson, and Marcus Luttrell. They were outnumbered. Ambushed by an estimated 30 to 40 enemy fighters, the team was quickly overwhelmed. Wounded and under relentless fire, Lt. Murphy made a decision that would define his legacy. He stepped into open ground, fully exposed to enemy fire, to make a satellite call for help. He was shot. He completed the call, then returned to the fight. Murphy, Dietz, and Axelson were killed in action. Sixteen more American warriors lost their lives when a rescue helicopter was shot down. Only Luttrell survived. Lt. Murphy’s actions saved lives and embodied the highest ideals of service. May we never forget their sacrifice.
