@QuantumWitness @MJBiercuk @Liv_Lanes Michael's point, I believe, doesn't really disagree with that. This is certainly semantic, but its that decreasing the thermal "resistance". between the qubit chip and DR isn't what's needed, it's decreasing the effective temperature of the EM bath from the wiring
English

@MJBiercuk @Liv_Lanes My take on this is that the temperature is the temperature. If the qubit is in a Gibbs state that’s characterized by a temperature above that of the mixing chamber, then the qubit is not being cooled well, full stop. If it’s not in a Gibbs state then we all politely turn away.
English

The grim reality of low temperature physics is that the number on your MXC thermometer is rarely the temperature of your device. Case in point, here's a plot of the estimated qubit temps for 5 IBMQ systems. I include the median temperature for each system in the legend.

Olivia Lanes@Liv_Lanes
i need everyone to stop telling me quantum computers will never work until we solve the "cooling problem." cooling is necessary, but it is not a problem! You might be surprised to know it's basically turnkey at this point, you press one button and voila -- 15mK.

@letonyo @fwilhelm @quantum_graeme The pressure to demonstrate value often scales with price. Theory is cheap. Corporate science and engineering pushing scale boundaries is very much not cheap.
English

@fwilhelm @quantum_graeme it's a shame that one cannot publish great experimental progress without a "story" illustrating what this progress buys you. For theory papers, this is not needed in general and we can focus on the technical results without adding any BS.
English

@pcreinhold @JoshKoomz I was heckled recently when I was giving a talk at a workshop because I didn’t include annealers as a type of qubits used by quantum computers. I focused on SC, spin, defects, ions, NA, etc
English

@quantum_graeme The idea that the quantum industry doesn’t pay well is.. curious
English

@Moor_Quantum @IBM @QuantinuumQC @Azure That looks tricky to pronoun. What are the phonetics?
R-Qops?
English

Folks, isn't it about time we had a Quantum standard?
@IBM & @QuantinuumQC use #QuantumVolume & IonQ_Inc uses #AlgorithmicQubits. Now @Azure Quantum has a metric called #rQOPS that counts operations that remain reliable for the duration of a practical quantum algorithm

The slogan "If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics" is condescending, and a plague to quantum science.
We understand quantum mechanics as well as—arguably, much better than—many other physical disciplines.

Just announced: We are partnering with @intel and @HRLLaboratories on semiconductor quantum computing, thanks to the LPS Qubit Collaboratory. We'll receive state-of-the-art devices, and Intel and HRL will learn more about their chips. #MidwestQuantum news.wisc.edu/partnerships-b…

Ever wished you had quantum dots, but not had quantum dots, and been sad as a result? Cheer up. The doctor is in. And the only prescription. Is HRL quantum dots. hrl.com/news/2023/06/1…

Excited to be sharing our qubit technology with academia! Problem: Dots are hard to make but super interesting. Solution: HRL gives you dots. hrl.com/news/2023/06/1…

@DJSnM 43 days in Atlanta, somewhat similar. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstat…

After seeing the I-95 collapse story I was reminded that we had almost the same thing in California and it was fixed in 26 days.
And semi-related the NRC performed a study on what would happen if a spent nuclear fuel container was also involved

@BudvarCat @Quasilocal New Haven is like.. right there. New Yorkers live next to the best pizza in the world and they celebrate grease on cardboard. Mind boggling.
English

@Quasilocal Connecticut has far better pizza than New York.
English

The whole concept of "New York pizza" feels like mass delusion to me... it's like standard greasy junk food. But 8 million people, with only other American pizza to comparre to, have some sentimental attachment to it.
Yeh I said it.
