@lernerphysics I could say the same thing about meeting @lernerphysics 😀 You are such an excellent model of how to use inclusive humor to push norms and challenge others to explore outside of their comfort zone. Many memorable quotes from this conference but among them is "normalize leaving!!"

If you want to join a community of physics teachers & realize how much you can contribute, sign up. Presenting at AAPT made me *feel* like a physics teacher who belongs & is valued. Even if you're not sure what you'd present, sign up. Mentors can help you think through it.

This is such a good idea, @Jleescience! I think if you want to know what you can learn at something like #AAPTSM23, this is the thread to read.
J. Lee (she/her)@Jleescience

It only took me the rest of the week, but in this thread is my recap of #AAPTSM23 I learned a lot and was very thankful for the encouragement to attend, connect with so many educators, develop in my identity as a physics educator, and support my learners next year!

@msruggerio @BarnettDreyfuss @NCNAAPT Tell them to contact me! I'm running a "Long Time Listener, First Time Caller" Session that designed for 4 new HIGH SCHOOL presenters to have coaching and encouragement to present at AAPT. I can get them in after the deadline!

@maalmeida85 @TeachWright @MrJoeMilliano In the "Arrange" menu for GraphSketcher, there's an "Add Jitter" command. You can plot the ideal points and have the computer make them a little bit off--or a lot more, if you add jitter more than once.

Today I'm advocating for you to include data points w/ scatter when creating graphs for student worksheets and assessments, especially early in the school year #iteachphysics

Do any #modphys teachers cover free fall later on w/ 2DM or different models? I've been doing it with CAPM for years and may switch it up this year. Just wondering what others have done? Go physics!

@mrmalvikscience Since I have some students who take AP1 and AP2 concurrently, I do ray optics->wave optics then heat-> gases->fluids, then electric circuits->electrostatics->capacitors->magnetism->photons->modern physics. DM if you want some packets.

I’m teaching AP 2 for the first time. #iteachphysics #modphys I’m looking for any help you can provide with scope and sequence or resources you use often. TIA

@MissStrunk In 1997, I was actively recruited to be a physics teacher in a large school district. In a second-round interview, I came out. All communication from them stopped. I called back, made the head of HR very uncomfortable by asking questions, but didn't get the job.

Have you personally ever declined a job or chose not to apply for a job because you felt some part of your identity (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation...) made the location of the job unsafe for you?

@RealMrSkyWalker My go-to, which may not be the best: an *unbalanced* force causes a change in momentum. If you get hit from both sides at the same time with the same strength, your momentum won't change. Same for Fg & Fn in this case. (Also--N2L is just conservation of momentum.)

Reasoning around mv conservation in a standard physics class for the first time in a while. How do you help them work out when an interaction diagram shows a system interacting externally, yet its momentum doesn't change? @lernerphysics #iteachphysics #modphys

Interviewing participants for a longitudinal NIH study sometimes leaves me speechless. A participant recently chose to drop out b/c of their health. When recording this, I noticed their start date was when I was still in high school. I am a 5th year PhD candidate now. Wild.

@MCDphysteach So thank you for helping me make my first step into Google Apps Scripts. I'm a newbie too, but your question helped me make my first step. I hope my answer helps! 5/n

@MCDphysteach And then, I went to the original spreadsheet, and now I can use =percentdiff(a1,b1)! It was simple, but it was also magic. 4/5

Who do I need to bribe at Google to convince them to include percent error and percent difference as functions in excel so I don't have to type =to_percent(abs(x-y)/average(x,y)) a million times?
