Today in clinic I met a wonderful Filipino couple. They were surprised when I spoke in Filipino as my last name made them think I wasn’t. Turns out, they come from my mother’s hometown, and are friends with the family we stayed with when I visited that province 12 years ago.

@Doctor_Bugti @Oluwamidunsin The problem that comes to mind w/ using USMLE materials universally is that guidelines vary in different countries. Also keep in mind the nuances of the countries. Australia deals with a lot of wildlife medicine while the Philippines will emphasize TB and dengue more than the US.

@Doctor_Bugti @Oluwamidunsin That being said, I studied for Step 1 with first aid and uworld prior to taking the Philippine licensure exam so I had a good foundation for the basic sciences. I had to supplement it still but nonetheless it did prove very beneficial towards my exam.

@Doctor_Bugti @Oluwamidunsin What ended up happening is a challenge of finding and securing the right review materials. Some review centers have extensive lectures and materials that seem like med school crammed into 1.5 months, designed more for those who want high scores.

@Doctor_Bugti @Oluwamidunsin No. Some subjects would be very hard; not just with the content but with regard to the depth of the question and rarity of the topic, while other subjects were either simple recall or more relevant to clinical practice

@mdwynant @Oluwamidunsin Was the Philippine medical licensure exam standardized and well-balanced across clinical areas? Were the questions practical and designed to test real clinical reasoning and deeper understanding rather than just recall? Asking for my information

@Oluwamidunsin @Doctor_Bugti Definitely agree w/ you both. Was more confident in taking USMLE because I knew what the scope and the potential depth of the questions would be. For the Philippine Licensure Exam, I had to prepare extensively because you’re at the mercy of the medical board’s questions

I think you talk solely based on your experience and I doubt you’ve ever had experience with these countries you compared with. I had written licensing exams for Africa, Europe, UK and USA Even though I agree that USMLE has a standardized and objective tool, I will also say thesame for PLAB of UK. For developing countries, I’ll say they have materials you can study that helps you, but they don’t have a dependable bank questions. What this does is when you’re preparing for such exam, you have to own your onions. You expect questions from any angle and prepare extensively. USMLE is a challenging Exam, but passing Nigeria licensing Exam then was more challenging and what that does is, when Doctors from developing countries like Nigeria travels out there, they Thrive! Simply because they were made with the toughest fabric

So I’ve really built a reputation in my residency program as being the resident most able to calm/appease/communicate with agitated, aggressive, difficult patients and relatives. 🌚🌚🌚
