Nobody seems to be particularly curious about the aftermath of the previous Israeli strike on the Iranian part of the field, so I’ll provide a brief overview, just in case anyone is keen to know:
The attack knocked out approximately 100 million cubic meters per day, which represents about 14–15% of Iran’s total production. Massive fires have been reported in phases 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the field. Experts indicate that, due to the high pressure in these wells, the risk of uncontrolled methane leaks is extreme. Unlike attacks on oil terminals (which affect exports and revenue), the attack on the gas field directly impacts the population and domestic industry. 70% of domestic gas consumption in Iran depends on South Pars. The government has begun rationing electricity and gas in major cities, and 40% of the country’s petrochemical production has been halted due to a lack of raw materials. Iran has completely suspended gas shipments to Iraq, a country that relies on this supply to generate between 30% and 40% of its electricity, which also threatens to destabilize Baghdad.
Iran’s logic has been very simple: “If we don’t have gas for our people, no one in the Gulf will export theirs”
