It became a bit of a running joke, but looking back, it was an early sign of where software was heading: from tool to assistant.

Before AI assistants became the big talking point, Microsoft gave us Clippy back in 1997. Originally launched in Microsoft Office 97 as part of the Office Assistant, Clippy was built to offer users guidance, suggestions, and support as they worked.

Simple example 💬 Chatbot: “Write me a project status update.” It writes the update. 🤖 Agent: “Pull the latest project data, summarise the risks, draft the update, email it to the team, and remind me if no one replies by Friday.” It can potentially do the whole chain.

Think of it like this: 💬 Chatbot = answers questions, explains things, writes content, helps you think 🤖 Agent = takes a goal, decides steps, uses tools, carries out actions, checks results

You might be seeing a lot of talk and hype around AI agents, so let’s break it down. 𝗔𝗜 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 💬 An AI chatbot mainly talks with you. 🤖 An AI agent not only talks, but can also do things on your behalf.
