Pi Day is a lie. If 3 = March, then .14159 is a fraction of a month, not day 14. Real Pi Day is March 5th. March 14th is just a formatting trick.

@mycoliza I read a review that was like “Neal Stephenson has finally perfected the art of writing a complete fulfilling 600 page book. Unfortunately for him, Seveneves is 900 pages long”

So, a lot of people ask me why I buy so many books. The truth is, I have a genetic disorder where my body doesn’t produce enough books of its own, so I have to supplement.

@LawrPaulson the "50 years" post is missing some text here: > The report includes a succinct description of Edinburgh LCF and is a nice snapshot of the state of the art in 1982 when Cambridge in 1982 to join a project run by Robin Milner and Mike Gordon.

Dune 2 (Westwood Studios, 1992) was a treat for RTS fans back then. Some argue it birthed the genre for a generation of gamers. I recently played it on my good old AMD 486 with a 15" monitor (they feel so small now, ha) and felt like I never left 1992. The mechanics somehow seem hardwired into my gamer brain. If you haven't played it lately and want to relive some early '90s nostalgia, you can't go without Dune 2.

@BruceHoult have you tried searching github? that's how i found several libraries for my inverter's wifi dongle. i now have a script to query the inverter every five minutes; wish i'd thought of that three years ago. the cloud service gives me CSV files but with one final reading/day.

My current experimental solar setup. Two groups of 3x 440W panels, each group in series and on its own 1200W MPPT controller. At noon the group that is propped up 15° is making 1200W, the other group 1050W. That is basically exactly 1320W less 3% loss in the cable, times cos(20.5°) and cos(35.5°) respectively (my latitude is 35.52° … and it’s almost the equinox).

@self Oh, that's a very sudden cutoff. Shading? My sun disappears behind a huge row of bamboo at around 4 PM, but I still get 200W-300W generation even through them! But the power is gone from the sun by then anyway.

@BruceHoult i just checked, and i generated 12.80 MWh in 2023 and 12.52 in 2024. my problem is i don't have space for batteries, but maybe i'll revisit that in four years when my contract with the power company is up for renewal. (batteries should be smaller and cheaper, too.)

@BruceHoult when i have bright clear skies AND the temperature is under 30C (rare between may and september), my 19 540w panels max out around 8 kW. 55-60 kWh is the most i see on such days. i'm at 31N, you're at 41S. i don't have batteries; i export to the power company what i don't use.

2 PM and 96% charged. Also here’s what the sky looks like. Very typical day here. We seldom get clear skies for long.

When documenting your project, you need to hammer home your _myth_. For example, in Plan 9, the myth is "a new Unix that's actually simple and elegant". This is what people really care about, and motivates your features. (If your project doesn't have a myth, you're ngmi.)
