@Amena__Bakr "We" have gone one better and paid him $21 billion for defensive weapons we shouldn't need. What does that make "us"? 😭😜

The US makes $21 billion in arms sales to Gulf states necessitated by the war they strived to avert.

For Gulf states and their major trading partners in Asia, the conflict is forcing a hard question: what, if anything, can protect supply chains if US security guarantees can no longer be taken for granted? scmp.com/week-asia/econ…

@MABaharoon Unfortunately, beauty also inevitably = jealousy, resentment, bitterness and ultimately malevolence of foes & "friends" alike.

Drivel. Gulf is obviously closed. Some mainline container services use UAE east coast ports of Fujairah & Khor Fakkan. Big lines have moved transhipment hubs to Salalah, Oman (Maersk) and Jeddah (MSC). Regional feeder services are operating either from there, or from Singapore.

Why did Iran strike its favorite Gulf state, Oman today? To raise the risk and disrupt supply chains to the GCC. Oman’s ports outside the Strait of Hormuz (Duqm and Salalah) are increasingly being positioned as alternative logistics gateways that can reroute regional trade during disruptions in the Gulf. Iran wants to diminish the strategic importance of these Indian Ocean gateways during regional tensions.

In an interview with me, the always lucid Hassan Mneimneh examines what was behind the U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran, and the fact that this high-risk gamble will bring Washington limited gains, while posing major risks for its regional security architecture: carnegieendowment.org/middle-east/di…
