Teachers have simultaneously: A) been stripped of the ability to do anything about poorly behaved students B) been pressured to pass students no matter what C) been tasks with taking on more and more responsibilities that used to belong to parents D) been vilified and blamed for every problem in society. So…why the job dissatisfaction? It’s a mystery!
Steve Magness@stevemagness

In 2008, 62% of teachers said they were very satisfied with their job. In 2022, that dropped to 12%. We've got a serious problem brewing in education...

Visa and Mastercard have installed a private tax on 77% of every transaction on earth. You never voted for it. You can't opt out. It has never gone down in 50 years. And it generates the highest profit margin of any company in the S&P 500. That's not a business. It's a toll booth on the global economy. Every time you swipe a card, the merchant pays 1.5% to 3.5% in interchange fees. The merchant raises prices. You pay the fee without ever seeing it on your receipt. A gas station in Ohio pays $47,000/year. A Brooklyn restaurant pays $83,000. They don't have a choice. If they refuse cards, they lose 80% of customers. Visa's profit margin was 54% last year. Apple's is 26%. Google's is 22%. Visa makes more profit per dollar of revenue than almost any company on earth, and they do it by taxing OTHER people's transactions. A $5.54 billion class-action settlement was finalized for interchange price-fixing. Five years later, the fees are higher than before the lawsuit. Visa and Mastercard have now agreed to cap standard interchange at 1.25% for 8 years in a new settlement. But premium cards, which make up 85% of consumer credit volume, are excluded. The DOJ sued Visa in September 2024 for monopolistic practices. If the DOJ case fails, Visa and Mastercard continue running the greatest toll-booth business in history. V trades at 30x earnings with 54% profit margins and zero credit risk. No inventory. No manufacturing. Pure extraction. If they compound at the historical rate, $10,000 invested today becomes $85,000 in 10 years. If the DOJ case succeeds and interchange gets restructured, the disruptors win: FedNow (government real-time payment rail, no interchange), stablecoin rails that bypass card networks, and payment processors like Stripe and Adyen building merchant routing around Visa/MA. Either way, the money moves somewhere. You can track DOJ case timeline alerts, Visa/MA options activity, and payment fintech institutional flows on tradevision. When DOJ announces a hearing date or deposition schedule, the options market reprices 24-48 hours before the news hits mainstream financial media. You'll see put volume building on V/MA and call volume building on payment fintechs simultaneously. (two private companies collect a fee on 77% of every transaction on earth. no election. no referendum. no opt-out. the fee has never decreased in 50 years. the most successful tax in history wasn't passed by congress. it was passed by a credit card terminal.)

Chicago once reversed a river so it wouldn’t have to drink its own sewage. For most of the 1800s the Chicago River flowed into Lake Michigan… the same lake the city relied on for drinking water. By the 1890s it had become a moving sewer. Slaughterhouses. Factories. Nearly two million residents. Everything drained toward the lake. Typhoid outbreaks followed. So Chicago attempted something radical. Engineers dug a 28-mile canal powerful enough to overpower the river itself, moving more than 45 million cubic yards of earth… one of the largest excavation projects in North America at the time. To make it work they cut straight through the Great Lakes–Mississippi continental divide. On January 2, 1900, the gates opened. Gravity did the rest. The Chicago River reversed. Water that once flowed toward the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean began flowing toward the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. Two of North America’s largest drainage systems had just been connected. The fallout was immediate. Cities downstream complained that Chicago had simply exported its sewage. States sued. Canada protested falling Great Lakes water levels. The fight reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which eventually limited how much water Chicago could divert from Lake Michigan. More than a century later the Chicago River still flows the wrong direction. One American city decided it was easier to turn a river around than move.

Supermarkets should only be allowed to sell seasonal produce. That way people would once again learn the food rhythms of nature. What's available at different times of the year. Why is that important? Fucking take a look around. We may soon need those old skills.

Under Trump’s watch, a DOGE employee allegedly took the Social Security data of more than 500 MILLION Americans on a thumb drive, kept his government credentials after leaving, and planned to hand the data over to a private company. And when a colleague warned him that it was illegal? He said he expected a PRESIDENTIAL PARDON from Donald Trump. This Administration didn’t just fail to protect your data. They created the conditions for it to be stolen, and signaled that anyone who did it would face zero consequences. washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

Read the whole thing but to sum it up, things are going to get a lost worse and the war seems likely to expand. The U.S. plan is to make Iranians suffer more and the Iranian plan is to make everyone else suffer more and they both may succeed.
Hamidreza Azizi@HamidRezaAz

#Iran War Update No. 12 (focus on Iranian strategic narrative): 🔹Iranian sources expect that the war is entering a new and more volatile phase that could, on the one hand, involve internal unrest, and on the other hand, expanded regional fronts and greater pressure on global energy markets. 🔹Iranian security circles are warning that a phase involving foreign-instigated domestic instability or civil strife may be approaching. In response, authorities appear to be tightening internal security, adjusting Basij and security forces procedures, and mobilizing pro-government supporters to maintain control of public spaces. 🔹Pro-government gatherings were reported in several cities during the night. Iranian officials have openly encouraged supporters to occupy the streets in order to prevent opposition groups from shaping the domestic narrative during wartime. 🔹At the same time, state media claim new volunteers have come forward to join Basij operations after reports that some Basij members had been targeted and killed by Israeli drones in Tehran. The state media are in fact signaling that attacks on these forces are unlikely to intimidate the government’s core ideological support base. 🔹Iranian strategic discussions also suggest that the conflict is entering a more complex regional phase. Hezbollah’s escalation is seen in Tehran as a way to reduce pressure on Iran by forcing the United States and Israel to divide their military focus across multiple fronts. 🔹In response to Hezbollah’s large rocket attacks, Israel reportedly conducted a major wave of strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon. Iranian analysts believe this could force Israel either to shift resources toward Lebanon or risk widening the war further. 🔹Some Iranian analysts also argue that the Yemen front could soon become active, potentially adding another layer of pressure on the United States and Israel and further stretching their military resources across the region. 🔹At the same time, reports indicate that Israel may be considering establishing a base in Somaliland to counter the Houthis in Yemen. If implemented, such a move could expand the conflict toward the Horn of Africa and create new targets for Houthi operations. 🔹At the same time, there is growing concern in Iranian discussions about Syria potentially becoming another arena of escalation. Some analysts warn that Syrian government forces could become involved in the conflict against Hezbollah in coordination with Israel, which in turn could trigger retaliation by Iran or by Iraqi Shia militias against Syrian targets. 🔹The maritime dimension of the conflict continues to dominate global attention. G7 leaders have discussed the possibility of organizing a coordinated naval escort mission for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz in order to restore maritime traffic and stabilize energy markets. 🔹The economic impact of the war is also becoming more pronounced. The International Energy Agency announced the release of around 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves in an effort to stabilize global markets. 🔹Despite these measures, energy markets remain under pressure due to the near halt of shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the broader disruptions caused by the conflict. 🔹Donald Trump stated that oil prices are already beginning to fall but indicated that the United States is unlikely to end the war before achieving its objectives, suggesting that Washington may still lack a clear endgame for the war. 🔹Meanwhile, GCC political dynamics appear more complicated behind the scenes than public statements suggest. According to reports cited by Reuters, some Gulf leaders privately believe the United States entered the war hastily and dragged regional partners into the conflict without a clear long-term plan. 🔹Iranian analysts interpret these reports as evidence that Gulf states may be increasingly frustrated with Washington’s ability to guarantee their security despite massive investments in defense systems. 🔹From the Iranian perspective, geography will ultimately force Gulf states to maintain relations with Iran regardless of current tensions. Iranian observers argue that once the war ends, regional states may reassess aspects of their strategic alignment with the United States. 🔹Diplomatically, Iranian analysts appear to view the recent UN Security Council abstentions by Russia and China pragmatically. They note that both countries attempted mediation efforts but could not guarantee that Gulf states would deny their territory to U.S. operations, making abstention the expected outcome. 🔹At the same time, Iranian observers emphasize that Russia and China continue to support Iran through diplomatic backing and other forms of cooperation, even if they avoid openly confronting the United States in international institutions. 🔹Iranian strategic thinking increasingly assumes that the United States may escalate the war further. Scenarios discussed include attacks on Iran’s economic and energy infrastructure, limited ground deployments, and expanded targeting of security forces such as the Basij. 🔹Overall, day 12 suggests that the war is moving toward a broader contest over regional positioning, domestic resilience inside Iran, and the ability of each side to impose economic and political costs over time. At the same time, the geography of the conflict may be widening, with growing indications that additional theaters such as Syria and even the Horn of Africa could become involved as the war evolves.

🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 The scandalous arrest of Ukrainian cash-in-transit guards in Hungary turned out to be so completely fabricated that Orban had to rush through a new “law” to retroactively legalize what was essentially the seizure of currency and precious metals being transported for a Ukrainian state bank. In other words: after all the drama and hand-wringing by Szijjártó in front of TV cameras, the guards were immediately released back to Ukraine with no suspicions or charges whatsoever (for what, exactly?). The armored cars will also be returned. But the tens of millions of euros and 9 kg of gold from Raiffeisen Bank that were being transported to Ukraine will not be returned under the newly minted “law” -- now it's until Ukraine restarts the Druzhba oil pipeline damaged by Russian strikes. Last time I checked, that was called armed robbery, grand theft, and extortion.

Two headlines. Same newspaper. Just days apart. According to the *Financial Times*, the Kremlin has backed covert efforts to keep Viktor Orbán in power. Around the same time, voices in Washington described Orbán’s leadership as “essential” for US interests. Different capitals. Same conclusion. When Moscow and Washington unexpectedly align around the same European leader, Europe cannot afford naïveté. Our democracy, sovereignty and unity must never depend on external agendas.
