We think third party doctrine sucks. That's why we build a set of eCommerce smart contracts where third parties don't see your data. When you buy something using UMP, your shipping information is end-to-end encrypted so only the seller sees it.

We often highlight how smooth and easy it is to buy things with UMP. But it's also one of the most private ways to shop online. When you buy through centralized eCommerce platforms, your personal data doesn’t just go to the seller—it’s shared with payment processors, customer support platforms, fraud prevention services, and a long list of other intermediaries. Many of these companies store your data indefinitely, sell it to third parties, or leave it vulnerable to hacks and data breaches. With UMP, only the seller receives your information—and only the data they need to ship your order. Your shipping address is end-to-end encrypted with the seller’s private key. To further protect buyers, we built a custom encryption scheme called Hermes, which introduces additional encryption via a secret key or password selected by the seller. Sellers are encouraged to rotate their Hermes password frequently to limit the exposure of encrypted messages in the event of a compromise. Hermes also includes message padding to prevent metadata attacks like message length analysis. If you need to communicate with the seller or file a dispute with an arbiter, those messages are also end-to-end encrypted using @xmtp_ , keeping sensitive information private even during dispute resolution. For maximum privacy, we recommend funding your wallet with privacy-preserving tools like @0xbowio's Privacy Pools and using a PO Box for deliveries. You can also use a pseudonym when providing your shipping information if needed. And we’re not stopping here. We’re actively working on new privacy features, including IPFS-hosted storefronts to eliminate centralized hosting risks, and anonymous, Sybil-resistant reviews to protect buyer identities while maintaining trust and transparency. Privacy isn’t just a feature on UMP—it’s the foundation. 🔒
