J D Nagarwala, the police officer who investigated Mahatma Gandhi’s murder: The swashbuckling Jamshed Dorab aka Jimmy Nagarwala had a rare privilege as a police officer. Nagarwala held charge in two cities at the same time. He was DCP (Special Branch) in the Bombay Police, as the Mumbai Police was then known, and the Superintendent of Police, Delhi. Nagarwala was the investigating officer in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case. He led a team of handpicked officers like Bhalchandra Ambadas Haldipur who probed the assassination conspiracy. The murder conspiracy had been hatched in Maharashtra, specifically in Mumbai, Pune, and Ahmednagar (Ahilyanagar), and executed in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948. Incidentally, as his surname suggests, Nagarwala’s family hailed from Ahmednagar. Nagarwala later became the police chief of Gujarat. He was also a boxer and a hockey player. Nagarwala formed part of the small but significant cohort of Parsis in the Imperial Police (Indian Police), as the IPS cadre was known pre-Independence. #history #Mumbai #Maharashtra #Gujarat #MumbaiPolice #MaharashtraPolice #GujaratPolice #police #PoliceHistory #Pune #Ahmednagar #MahatmaGandhi #Gandhiji #Gandhi #NathuramGodse #Godse #Marathi #Parsi #Parsis #IPS
