#INTERVIEWTHREAD #LeganesRealMadrid
Carlo Ancelotti spoke in the press room at Real Madrid City and discussed his team’s game against Leganés at the Municipal de Butarque stadium, on matchday 14 of LaLiga:
“The team is doing well. Those who played for their national teams have returned in good shape and without issues. Those who have been here have worked well. We have to continue the good momentum from the last game.”
“It's the start of a very important cycle of matches and we want to start well. We're confident and I hope we can put in a good performance tomorrow.
The idea is very clear: to put out the best team every game. I will do that tomorrow and also on Wednesday. We don't plan to change depending on the competition.
Valverde playing at full-back and Asencio at centre-back is one option. There are other options that we have tested during this break. I'll try to choose the best possible option for the team.”
Playing time for academy players
“It's not difficult, it's pretty easy to choose. My responsibility is to put out the best possible team for every game. The youth team is a very important part of this club. I don't want to call into question the planning that has been carried out over the years.
It's been very good in the last 10 years, considering that the youth academy is a very important part of it. Many home-grown players have been, are and will play in the first team. Giving them minutes is not the aim of this club.
There have been a lot of players from the youth academy who haven't played in the first team. There are also some young players here that we're looking at who could be ready one day to play for Real Madrid.”
Mbappé
“He's had the opportunity to train and he's done well. I think his condition has improved and hopefully tomorrow he will be able to show all his qualities because there are many of them. I believe he's happy, calm and pleased to be here. I don't think he has any problems and I think it's wrong to speculate.”
Mbappé’s position
“He's never asked me for a position on the pitch. Obviously, he wants to be in the starting line-up, like everyone else. He and Vinicius don't have a fixed position on the pitch, they can change depending on the situation of the match.”
Mbappé’s motivation levels
“All strikers have had a bad spell. When strikers go through a bad patch, they get a bit frustrated, as is the case with Mbappé. But he's motivated and happy to train and to be with his teammates. I only see that, the spell is going to stop sooner or later.
He's doing very well and I'm convinced that he'll have a great game tomorrow. This dry spell without scoring is going to end. It's just a question of time, he has enormous quality and he's going to show it.”
Asencio
“He's doing very well because he made his debut in the game against Osasuna and he did very well. He's prepared and physically ready to compete. He's upbeat and motivated. He is doing very well.”
Taking responsibility
“Some are taking more responsibility. I'm talking about Valverde, Camavinga, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Bellingham... I think this is a process that needs time.
In this regard, we have lost the most important piece, which is Carvajal, but he's with us every day in the dressing room. The process of responsibility for the young players requires a bit of time.
They realise that this is an important aspect and will try to make good progress quickly in this respect.”
Brahim
“He came back from injury very well. He used the break to play with Morocco's national team, managed to score and come back in an extraordinary condition.
He's going to be very important for us because he can also play as a winger and help the midfield a lot. He's a very important player for us, as he was last year. I think he's going to be more important this year.”
Winter transfer window
“We'll see, we'll start talking about it after the last game against Sevilla on the 22nd. Then we'll consider what to do in the winter transfer window.”
Specific work during international break
“We focused the work on the defensive line because we had Asencio and Mendy and we tried out right-backs. Does Mbappé need offensive work? I don't think so. I don't have to teach him how to play as a striker. He can teach me and many others how a striker has to work.”

#INTERVIEWTHREAD #RealMadridOsasuna
Carlo Ancelotti spoke in the press room at the Santiago Bernabéu and the coach analysed the Real Madrid-Osasuna game, on matchday 13 of LaLiga:
“It was a good match. We started off in control, without too much of a rush, and when we opened the scoring through Vinicius, the match went well. The team put in a good performance, with more attitude and commitment. The problem is the three injuries in the first half, which we are now assessing.”

#INTERVIEWTHREAD #RealMadridOsasuna
Raúl Asencio made his official debut for Real Madrid in the victory over Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Castilla defender replaced Militão in the 30th minute and produced a sublime performance, including an assist for Bellingham for the team’s second goal.
Asencio, who joined the club in the 2017/18 season and is in his second campaign with the academy side, spoke to Realmadrid TV after his debut:
“Ever since I started playing football I dreamed of this. It's the dream of every boy who takes his first steps in football. Being able to fulfil this dream, is amazing, I can't find the words to describe it.”

#INTERVIEWTHREAD #RealMadridOsasuna
Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press at Real Madrid City on the eve of the LaLiga matchday 13 clash with Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu (Saturday, 2:00pm CET):
“Osasuna are playing really well. They're well placed in the table, playing some great football and enjoying a good run of form. We're approaching it as a perfect opportunity to get back to playing better, to come through this rough patch. We're not showing the best of ourselves and tomorrow is another chance to get back to winning ways."
“We've spoken and we've tried to assess the situation with the players. We believe we've found the solution. Of course, it's all in theory for now, then we'll have to put it into practice tomorrow by showing something different to what we have done in recent games.
The team is united, motivated and aware of what's happening - we're certain we've found the right solutions, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if we can deliver on them."
Does he feel strong enough to get through this spell?
“Yes, and I'm not the only one. This rough patch is affecting all of us, not just me. The club and everyone involved.
We remain a close-knit family with clear ideas, helping each other out, and I have absolute faith in the players, they're aware of the difficulties. These periods always crop up in football. It's an opportunity to come out the other side stronger."
What are the problems that have led to these Real Madrid displays?
“We believe we've found the solution, but it's all theoretical. We'll see it in practice tomorrow. This isn't the appropriate place to discuss the issues we've had because everyone has their own opinions.
We have to address the reality, which is how we've lost recent games, and we have to switch things around. We think we've found the problems and we'll see if we're right tomorrow."
Mbappé misses out on France squad
“I haven't spoken to him about it and I don't plan to. It's a matter for the national team coach and I have no right to judge his decisions. He made the decision and we have to accept it. I won't allow myself to be drawn on these kinds of choices. Mbappé is fine, he's motivated, struggling like we all are, but determined to get through this tough spell."
Does he regret staying?
“That makes me laugh. Thanks for giving me something to laugh about, but now's not the time because it's a difficult period and we have to focus on that. It's time to reflect and then to act. I don't regret a thing.
I try and enjoy myself, and I still enjoy every day I get to spend here at Valdebebas, and that's not going to change until my final day. I'm thankful for all the time I spend here and the time I still have left.
It's a tough time right now but I'm happy to be here, at this club, which is the best in the world in terms of redressing difficult situations. They've always happened in the past, and they will continue to arise, unfortunately."
Bellingham's position
“I could give you an idea but this isn't the time to speak about that. I'm excited to see tomorrow what we've been discussing over the last few days. It's not an attacking issue, nor is about positioning or strategy or where the players want to play. It's a defensive problem, it's not going forward."
Vini Jr.
“I didn't want to switch the position of player who makes the difference for us. Sometimes during a game he might switch with Mbappé and I don't intend to change that. It's not an issue with offensive positioning, it's defensive."
Valverde
“He's in great shape, ready to play tomorrow. He's trained well, as have all the others the last couple of days in preparation for the match. I've never said he had a back issue, it's never something we've said at the club. He was struggling with discomfort in his back during the week but he's recovered now. He's absolutely fine now and we'll be counting on him."
How does he deal with losing a game now?
“I enjoy every day, even during the tough times, because I see a group of people who are together trying to give their best, the support offered by the club, the players. On a personal level, I've had some long nights, mulling things over and trying to hit upon a solution.
Then you share your thoughts with the players, the club, and the night drags on even longer. Now we're building up to the game, the positive outlook, hunger, motivation to see whether we're capable of putting our developments into practice."
Endrick
“He's ready to play. He's doing fantastically and he show such quality in training. I would say the same thing about Arda, they're young and they're putting pressure on the others. Could the collective approach to coming through this period as quickly as possible involve Endrick? I think so.
Could Arda be involved? I believe so as well. But our goal is to come through this rough patch as quickly as we can, not give game time to those players. Arda could well be involved in the process because he's in great shape, and the same goes for Endrick."
How are the players doing?
“We believe we can come through this by changing our approach. But more than just words, you have to act. I can talk all I want but we have to act, the same goes for the players. Words get lost in the wind, performances are tangible. The way we play tomorrow, what we show on the pitch, remains in the result and the minds of our fans."
What does the team need to rediscover its defensive intensity?
“Commitment, concentration and teamwork. I've repeated it time and again but that's all it comes down to. Commitment to being a compact unit; concentration in terms of positioning and making the right defensive decisions, whether to get tight or drop off and cover; and teamwork, because we defended collectively brilliantly last year.
It doesn't matter whether we employ a high press, the key to a good defensive set-up lies in having a compact unit. It doesn't matter whether that's a high line or a low block, it's all about being staying tight."
Will it do Mbappé good not to head off with his national team, and what must he do to rediscover his scoring form?
“He's training well, he's going through a tough period, and that goes for the whole team and every single one of us. We all have to view this as an opportunity, and when adversity comes, we have to overcome it quickly and use it as a source of greater motivation, focus and attitude.
That's how we deal with the problems when they arise. The issue he's got is the same as all of us, we're unable to perform to the best of our abilities. We're trying to treat this spell as a big opportunity to be better in the next match, the following day and into the future. I'm convinced he'll get over the slump."
"It's a tough time for all of us. I'm not just talking about Mbappé, I could say the same of Vinicius, Rodrygo, Bellingham, all of us, me included. It's normal. It's a difficult time, it's nothing particularly unusual.
I don't have any problem admitting it, it's to be expected in football from time to time, this is a sport where someone has to lose. We're not very used to it because things have been going so perfectly for such a long time. Now we're in a rough patch.
We accept that, but we can't let our heads drop, we have to hold them higher than ever. I'm convinced that will happen because this is a strong group, we're healthy, motivated, at a great club, the best in the world.
It's the best place to come through difficult spells because we're all in the same boat here, the club, the players and myself. We're aware of it and we're more united than ever."
Has he changed his mind about signings?
“Now is not the time for signings, to think about that, because it would mean neglecting the problems we have. We can't make any signings now, it's a matter we'll discuss in the coming months."
Doubts?
“I'm no sceptic, I look at the reality. I've said time and again that I'm convinced we'll see a better display tomorrow, so today I'm saying let's wait for tomorrow.
I'm certain we'll look to put into practice the things we've discussed, my doubt is whether we'll see it properly tomorrow. I'm focused on the fact we've identified the issue and it's clear, so I want to see a reaction tomorrow in that regard."
How does he see the future?
“I think, despite the issues we're having, it can still be a successful season where we fight for trophies in every competition. That's how I'm looking at the future, it's the way it's going to be.
We have the chance to win the Club World Cup in a month's time. We're going to compete in LaLiga and in the Champions League. That's always been the case."

Lucas Vázquez spoke to the press following the final whistle to assess the Real Madrid-Milan clash:
“It was a very difficult game. They went ahead, we drew it level, and then they scored again before the break just when we had things a bit more under control. We were trying to turn it around and they hit us on the break to make it 1-3."
“We're going through a spell where our opponents are really punishing up. We have to keep working hard to make sure it doesn't happen again."
Conceding 9 goals in three games
“It's not a good statistic. Defending and attacking are collective tasks, that's what we have to underline. We'll get through this together, we have to keep our heads up and continue working hard. This is a long-run thing and Madrid will fight until the end."
Fans
“We owe everything to the fans, and the ones at the Bernabéu are the best. What we have to do now is work to turn things around, we're always going to keep going to the very end."
Upcoming away trips
“You're always playing against the best in the world in the Champions League, home and away. Every game will be like a final for us, because we want to win all our remaining league phase fixtures."

Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press at the Santiago Bernabéu to discuss Real Madrid-Milan on Champions League matchday four:
“The reality is what we're seeing on the pitch and something is lacking. We have to fix it. It's going to be a long night, that's normal. We all have to think about how we can improve things and find that solidity we had for such a long time, and that we're lacking right now.
We're struggling to find that solidity. We've conceded 9 goals in recent games and that's far too many for a team that has built its foundation on being solid.”
“We created a lot of chances and lacked a bit of a clinical edge, but the key thing is how easily our opponents are finding attacking outlets. That's our main issue and we have to fix it. We can't be like we were tonight from a defensive point of view."
Tough spell as a coach
“There are difficult periods every year, when you have to fight, dig in and think about things. What is unusual, is that this team has been on a fantastic run and it's dropped off very quickly in recent games.
That's part and parcel of football, but the good thing is you have chance to react quickly, and we have another home game so we can get back to being the team we were last year."
Is it unfair for people to question you?
“I don't think it's unfair. I think it's to be expected when the team is not producing their best, that is a coach's responsibility. It's important for all of us to have that sense of responsibility.
When we win, we win together, and when it's time to dig in and fight, we have to do that together as well because that way we're far stronger."
“We all have to take a step up and the team is united and together in that sense. Suffering brings teams together and helps you get through the rough patch as quickly as possible.
It's good that the players are gutted. It's going to be a very long night, but that's good because it means we're all thinking about how we can improve."
“It's a healthy dressing room. There is a lot of criticism around the attitude and the training sessions at the moment.
You have to accept people's opinions, but we have to focus on the reality, which is that we're not playing well and we want to do better because otherwise we won't be in the mix come the end of the season.
We have to fix things and improve defensively because that's where the key lies. I have to try and find solutions to put out a more balanced, solid side, but without going too mad with lots of changes. A few small tactical details could change things."
Do opposition teams run more than Real Madrid
“We didn't run more than the opposition last year and we won the Champions League. That's not an issue, it's about being more solid. We have to work together better. We've been unable to deliver an effective group performance. We have to work more on a collective level."
Do you believe this team will compete for trophies?
“We have faith this team is going to improve and compete in every competition, just like it always has done."
Valverde substitution
“Having people's opinions on social media isn't easy. I took him off because he wasn't 100%. He had a back issue and he didn't look quite right physically."
Tactical rigour of Italian football
“Italian football tends to be more closed tactically. We were far too open and we made life easy for Milan.”

#INTERVIEWTHREAD #ChampionsLeague
Lucas Vázquez spoke to the media to discuss the Champions League matchday four fixture between Real Madrid and Milan, which will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu (Tuesday, 9pm CET). Before beginning his press conference, the player wanted to remember those victims of the tragedy in Valencia:
“I would like to send a message of support to all the families affected by the DANA. These are difficult times.
I would like to transmit to them that they are not alone, that we will try to support and help as much as we can and also to convey the pride we feel for the solidarity shown by the people at this difficult time.
Hopefully, everything will return to normal and we will come through this as soon as possible”.
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO PREPARE FOR A MATCH IN THIS SITUATION?
“It's difficult because at this moment football has to take a back seat. The most important thing is the people, and when these tragedies happen, it's difficult to shut yourself off”.
THE FEELING IN THE DRESSING ROOM
“We're all very sad. It's very tough what has happened. There are a lot of people suffering and it affects everyone”.
REFLECTION ON THE EVENTS IN VALENCIA
“We feel very sad about everything that's happened. This has been a difficult time, a turbulent time, a time when our people have suffered, and it's time for all of us to reflect and think about what has happened. Ultimately, we will all try to help each other to get through this”.
ASSESSMENT OF THE POLITICAL HANDLING OF THE TRAGEDY
“I'm saddened by what has happened. People have suffered a lot. Once again the human quality of the people in Spain has come through once again.
The solidarity from the first minute has been incredible. People have come from all over Spain to do their bit. That's beautiful and I hope we can learn from these circumstances”.
DO THE PLAYERS HAVE THE POWER TO CALL OFF A MATCH?
“As the coach said, he's absolutely right. At the moment our opinion or our strength means nothing and we have to be professional and try to do what we are told to do, even if we don't want to do it. That's what we have to do”.
FOOTBALL'S RESPONSE TO THE TRAGEDY
“It shouldn't have been played. Football should have taken a back seat. It was the time to be with those affected and to only focus on that”.
DOES IT NOT STOP BECAUSE THE WHEELS HAVE TO KEEP MOVING?
“A lot of things slip through our fingers. There's a big gap between the footballers and the whole organisation. Communication is complicated. Football is an industry in which we the players are the main actors, but we don't have that power of decision and sometimes we have to do things that we don't feel like doing but we have to do”.
WHAT'S YOUR MESSAGE TO THE FOOTBALL AUTHORITIES?
“We're very sad about what has happened, about how things have developed. At the end of the day, now is the time to support those affected, to try to help them and to focus on that. There will be time for us to reflect on what happened later”.
DO YOU FEEL HURT OR EMBARRASSED ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY IN VALENCIA?
“I'm saddened by everything that has happened. The images are very hard, it's difficult. We have had to suffer from a distance like that.
Seeing everything that happened... it's difficult to put it into words. When you see people suffering and have lost practically everything in their lives, you just have to try to help, and now it's not the time to talk about political issues”.
ROLE IN THE TEAM
“Carvajal's injury is very significant for Real Madrid, both on a footballing level and on a personal level. He's a player with tremendous character and charisma.
It's up to me to perhaps take a bit more responsibility than I have been doing, to give my best and, most importantly, to try to help the team as much as I can and to give everything I've got”.
