Vitinha is the blueprint for what a modern deep-lying midfielder looks like in big games.
He’s had 25.8 carries and 11.6 progressive carries p90 in the Champions League, which is absolutely insane.
He can survive under pressure, & he’s actively always using the ball to relieve it and drive his team forward.
That’s elite composure + bravery on the ball. 🔝
Mainoo is already showing flashes of this under Carrick (dropping deep, receiving on the half-turn, progressing).
If he adds that aggressive carrying element, taking more risks to beat the first line and create transitions, his ceiling goes through the roof.
He doesn’t need to match Vitinha’s passing range overnight, but sharpening the dribbling and decision-making in those moments will make him unplayable.
This is exactly why pairing him with someone like Ederson (mobile, physical, high-intensity) makes so much sense.
You get two players who can rotate in a fluid double pivot, carry under pressure, and make the midfield dynamic instead of static.
Carrick is clearly pushing Mainoo towards this profile. If he nails the next step, we’re looking at a special very special player.
