Dr. Alfred Pennington's work was cited. Low-carb was mainstream. Medical students were taught: "Obesity is often a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism." Then 1977 happened. Dietary Guidelines launched. By 1980, medical textbooks had changed: "Restrict fat and calories. Carbohydrates are acceptable. Low-fat is essential." Same condition. Opposite treatment. What changed? Not the science. The politics. Ancel Keys and the sugar industry won the narrative battle. Medical students in 1975: Taught that carbs cause obesity. Medical students in 1985: Taught that animal fat causes obesity. The evidence didn't change. The funding did. Doctors who trained before 1977 remember when low-carb was standard advice. They watched their profession reverse course entirely. Some kept prescribing low-carb anyway. They were called "old-fashioned" or "behind the times." The young doctors, trained in the new guidelines, called them dangerous. But the old doctors had clinical experience. They knew it worked. That didn't matter. The guidelines said otherwise. Medicine became standardised. Deviation wasn't tolerated. The 1960s consensus was memory-holed. We pretend it never existed.
