April 14, 1846. The group of saints that led the exodus west were camping in Locust Creek Iowa. Within the last two years the saints had lost Joseph and Hyrum Smith and now were forced to leave the city and temple they had worked so hard to build. The future was uncertain. In the group was William Clayton, a covert from Europe who was anxious to hear news of his pregnant wife. That day the news came, she had delivered a boy and both were in good health. That night William celebrated with others in the camp and the next morning inspiration struck: “This morning I composed a new song, ‘All Is Well.’" he wrote in his journal. "I feel to thank my Heavenly Father for my boy. I hope that my wife will soon be well.” Over 150 years later, William Clayton's hymn continues to inspire and lift saints across the globe, today is is known by the title 'Come Come Ye Saints'. Given the origin of this hymn, it seemed fitting that I should sing it to my new daughter as she slept in my arms hours after being born. 1.Come, come, ye Saints, no toil nor labor fear; But with joy wend your way. Though hard to you this journey may appear, Grace shall be as your day. ’Tis better far for us to strive Our useless cares from us to drive; Do this, and joy your hearts will swell— All is well! All is well! 4.And should we die before our journey’s through, Happy day! All is well! We then are free from toil and sorrow, too; With the just we shall dwell! But if our lives are spared again To see the Saints their rest obtain, Oh, how we’ll make this chorus swell— All is well! All is well!
