An additional 33 coercive control offences were recorded by NSW Police in August 2024. Great to see @BOCSAR continuing to offer preliminary reporting on the new coercive control offence in NSW. bocsar.nsw.gov.au/documents/topi…

Fantastic to be talking about community-led prevention in action! @DV_NSW #DVNSWConference Day 2. There is so much great work already happening, we need to make it visible, strengthen it and celebrate it.

Agree @YWCACanberra - we can criminalise coercive control well and do it in a staged and measured way with ongoing consultation. The Implementation Taskforce has been a critical part of the process in NSW #DFV #CoerciveControl

⚖️👩‍⚖️ YWCA Canberra fully supports the announcement today by the Canberra Liberals to criminalise coercive control & increase the education investment to ensure it is structured, targeted & informed and will operate alongside law reform 1/2 #comments" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">canberratimes.com.au/story/8764639/…

@mike_salter I think this is worthy of further exploration - shame, shunning and ‘casting out’ as community justice have been around as long as human history.

@ADanielOAM Writing this paper has made me think about shame as a moral emotion - all human beings have impulses to do bad things, and shame is part of the struggle of being a good person. However most of this literature sees shame as fundamentally negative and destructive.

Our review of academic use of the term "minor attracted people" is now published at Trauma Violence Abuse. "Minor attracted" as a euphemism for paedophile originates in pro-paedophile groups so its migration into academic literature has been controversial. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15…

If consent were just a matter of better education, drink spiking wouldn’t exist. Needle spiking wouldn’t exist. Stealthing wouldn’t exist. Education is important, but it’s not the singular solution to a more complex problem.

@AnnalisaB @GdnSaturday The psychologist you spoke to doesn’t fully understand coercive control. An outright sociopath might want you to fail, but a coercive controller can work to undermine your sense of you own capacity whilst still considering themselves a ‘good guy’.

@AnnalisaB @GdnSaturday It’s likely coercive control. It’s not about the boyfriends ‘intent’ in this case, it’s about the impact. She is left confused, questioning her capabilities, feeling like it’s too hard to see her family & friends (isolating tactics), never able to please him, goalposts moving 1/

The Rapid Review made recommendations in this area, including one for an urgent inquiry into the connections between domestic, family and sexual violence and suicide. Cc @SummersAnne

Another case in the UK where a man has been charged with manslaughter (and coercive control) after causing his partner’s suicide. To date no DPP in Australia has charged manslaughter on this basis. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

@KPMaltzahn Not that I have been able to locate specifically named as such. There is potential room in the 702m co-funded package, which gives latitude to states to distribute. But there may be further announcements with a formal response to the Rapid Review.

One day, sitting in my therapist's office, I told her, "I keep trying to give my husband everything he wants and needs, but it is never enough. I am never enough." Looking at me compassionately, and knowing my husband was abusive in many ways, she told me, "An abuser is like a bucket that is filled with holes. You keep trying to fill the bucket, but the water keeps pouring out the holes. So you work harder and harder, pouring more and more water into the bucket. But no matter how hard you try, you will never fill it. Eventually, you will become exhausted, worn out, and despondent from your efforts. I would suggest that you stop trying to fill his bucket and instead, begin to fill your own." #emotionalabuse #coercivecontrol #domesticabuse #narcissist #abusiverelationships

@DrLisaWheildon From some of the students we’ve taken, a good grounding in DFV and coercive control is very ‘hit and miss’ in social work degrees & very dependent on both the uni & student electives. Need National overhaul #coercivecontrol

I wonder if this is any different for social work students here in Australia? Do social work student learn how to identify coercive control?
BBC Radio 4 Today@BBCr4today

A BBC investigation has found a third of university social work courses do not offer training in how to spot victims of coercive control. Nicole Jacobs, the Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, tells #R4Today a lack of training could lead to 'victim blaming'.
