ASOME Anatomy Society: Brain Awareness MYTH Myth People with epilepsy are possessed or cursed. Medical Fact Epilepsy is a medical condition of the brain and is not related to spiritual possession or curses.

Myth Epilepsy cannot be treated. Medical Fact Many people control seizures with antiepileptic medications, and some may become seizure-free. Myth/Fact presented by the ASOME Anatomy Society for Brain Awareness Week.

Myth. Epilepsy only affects children. Medical Fact. Epilepsy can occur at any age, from infancy to old age. Presented by the ASOME Anatomy Society

Myth: People can catch epilepsy from someone who is having a seizure. Medical Fact: Epilepsy is not contagious. It is a neurological condition caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It cannot spread from person to person through touch, saliva, air, etc.

Myth. You should put an object in someone’s mouth during a seizure. Medical Fact. Never put anything in their mouth. It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue. Forcing an object (like a spoon or wallet) into the mouth can break teeth or injure the jaw. -Anatomy Society
