How hard is this to understand? This isn’t some random line Muslims keep repeating for fun. Anyone with basic reasoning skills should realize this is a core epistemological principle rooted in Islam itself.
That said, we clearly haven’t been spelling it out plainly enough, so here it is in the simplest terms possible.
There has always been one true religion: the worship and submission to the one true God. This religion began with Adam, the first human and the first prophet, and it was preached continuously by every prophet after him... Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad, peace be upon them all.
Unlike Christianity and Judaism, which were named later by their followers, God had not yet formally designated a specific name for this one true faith in the revelations given to Moses or Jesus. The message was the same, but the name was not finalized.
In the final revelation to Prophet Muhammad, God Himself declared the name of this same, unchanged faith. That name is Islam, which literally means submission to God, as stated in the Qur’an (5:3).
So when Muslims say that Moses and Jesus were “Muslims,” it does not mean they followed a 7th-century religion. It means they followed the same one true faith: total submission to the one true God... a faith that God later named Islam.
From our perspective, once the Qur’an is established as the true objective word of God.. the God of Adam and all prophets.. this conclusion follows naturally.
It’s really not that complicated.
