Michael Jackson and Nelson Mandela shared a deep and respectful friendship that began in July 1996.
During Jackson's first trip to South Africa, he visited Mandela at his home to celebrate the President's 78th birthday.
They both shared commitment to humanitarian causes, with Mandela once referring to Michael as a "close member of our family"
Mandela later presented Michael with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the KORA All Africa Music Awards, where Michael donated R1 million (approx $163,000 at the time) to Mandela's foundation
