@AliMicMac First person in my family to have any kind of degree (undergrad/masters/etc.). 2 family members were nurses before degree requirements. I’ll be the first (hopefully if all goes well) to have a PhD too. It’s a weird one bcos they’re proud, but also confused why I chose all this 😂

Out of curiosity, grad students/faculty, how many of you are the first person in your family to get a PhD (but not a uni degree, ie your parents have uni degrees but not a PhD or other grad degree)?

!PLEASE SHARE! I’m interested in exploring working with an academic coach for postdoc applications - it would be great to have any personal recommendations, especially for people with experience of working with PGRs/ECRs and/or historians. Please feel free to DM me!

@CulturedModesty I may be an outlier, but when I really need to be inspired to think big I turn to theory or philosophy books. Sometimes history texts can feel very granular and it’s helpful to step back and think "wait, what even *is* time?" (In my case)

Reimbursement culture assumes a ton: family money, savings, etc and can close the door to a lot of exceptionally talented/smart people from diverse backgrounds of all sorts. If we want academia to change, we need to make it economically (in addition to other things) accessible!

@AliMicMac Lllllooookkkk. Reimbursement life is of the Devil. And then you are at the mercy of the postal service! Just a supreme struggle that sometimes makes you wanna scream.

@CulturedModesty Yep!! One of my friends pointed out that we should get the fellowship money + whatever share of the investment interest our money makes if we’re paying upfront and being reimbursed!

As it seems this is starting to get out and I think I’m allowed to share now - I’m thrilled to have been selected as the Barra Material Culture Dissertation Fellow at the McNeil Center at U Penn for the 2023-2024 academic year!
