I am out of X but this time we need to use each available communication spot to Stand UP for Science. Despite the weather the Chicago scientific community (including prospective young PhD students) gathered today to show that science is for everyone.

I’m Standing Up for Science today in Chicago against the shameful, destructive, and illegal funding cuts by President Trump and Elon Musk. Researchers at National Institutes of Health find breakthrough treatments and cures. They deserve support—not attacks.

This is illegal. The courts put a restraining older on halting NIH funding and the federal register is making an end-run around that, killing new grants or renewals. Unchallenged, it’ll lead to layoffs of scientists & support staff. Will disrupt nondilutive biotech funding too.

Finally, someone is reporting on how funding of new NIH grants is effectively frozen due to an administrative block 👇 Grants already submitted cannot be reviewed, and grants already reviewed with excellent scores cannot be funded. This is the opposite of "efficiency".

Thousands of workers were fired from CDC, NIH, & other agencies, even if they had excellent performance reviews. These are people with critical jobs like monitoring disease outbreaks or developing cancer drugs. Their salaries are a miniscule % of the budget. This makes no sense.

Phil, does that justify firing probationary workers like this? What that says is that policy changes are needed, training, perhaps more people to manage the issue. But that’s not what they are doing. They are looking for the word “probationary” and sending terminations. If your plan is to “well…on the other hand…” this like there are both sides it’s already wrong.

The NIH’s new imposed standard indirect cost rate threatens life-saving brain and behavior research that benefits millions of Americans.
