The ship spilled more than 10 million gallons of crude oil into the surrounding waters, resulting in one of the most devastating man-made environmental disasters in history. But the disaster was precipitated by a series of errors and ill-timed distractions. Most important among them: Captain Joseph Hazelwood, negligent in his duties, had left the bridge in the charge of an under-qualified third mate. What could have changed? A single, simple amendment to standard operating procedures — mandating the presence of the captain or a fully qualified officer on the bridge during navigation through the hazardous waters— could have prevented this catastrophe. If Captain Hazelwood had decided to stay on the bridge or if the third mate had been fully qualified, the Exxon Valdez could have missed the reef. The grounding would have been averted, saving billions of dollars in cleanup and continued restoration efforts, not to mention the immense toll on wildlife and damage to the local fishing industry. One missing captain. One disastrous misjudgment. One irremediable ecological disaster. History turned... but it almost didn’t. This is Almost History. A timeline that almost was.
