Tamil Nadu's mechanized boat fishermen returned to the sea after two months despite weather warnings, as the annual fishing ban ended on Sunday. The fisherfolk hope for a good catch to offset the recent hike in fuel prices and other essential materials. #fishing #fuelprice

Students from #Chennai who returned from J & K recall grim tales of witnessing drones, missiles and hiding in bunkers: Living in the Poonch region, Priya’s image of the valley transformed overnight — from a picture-postcard town to a grim battleground directly in the line of fire from across the border. Earlier this week, after India retaliated to the Pahalgam attack, Poonch witnessed bouts of shelling. Just 50 km from the Line of Control, Poonch is home to the first district hospital in the border region—where she was on duty until recently. “Two days ago, Poonch was badly hit. The night sky seemed like it was full of fireworks. It was deafening. People were scared to even step out. We had to take cover from drones, missiles, and shelling,” she recalled. “We treated many people with injuries and burns. Even our hospital was declared sensitive and cordoned off. We were told to stay on the ground floor, and some were shifted to shelling-safe bunkers,” Priya said. “A group of friends pooled in for a cab and travelled 220 km to our rented house near the Govt Medical College in Jammu,” she said. “People were scared to step out after sunset. There were blackouts and heavy firing. In Mendhar and the Poonch neighbourhoods, we saw damaged buildings and several injured civilians, mostly with burns,” she said. On Friday, she boarded a train to Delhi, and from there, took a flight home to Chennai. On Thursday night, another group of students staying in rented accommodation in Sidra near Jammu witnessed Pakistani missiles neutralised by India’s air defence systems in the midst of a blackout. B Gorbel, 29, a student from Thanjavur pursuing a PhD at IIT-Jammu, said, “Our families were concerned after learning that missiles were being launched in Jammu. Thanks to the safety drill, we took cover while the missiles were intercepted.” On Friday morning, Gorbel and his friends decided to pack their bags and leave J&K. As flights were cancelled and buses unavailable, trains seemed like the one way out. “The bookings were full in the available ones. Eventually, we managed to find a special train to New Delhi,” said S Surya Narayanan, 29, from Trichy, who is pursuing his PhD in IIT-Jammu.
