Let's Eradicate Obstetric Fistula in Africa
Here are five key things to understand about obstetric fistula:
1. What it is?
Obstetric fistula is a serious childbirth injury where a hole develops between the birth canal and the bladder and/or rectum. This leads to continuous leakage of urine or feces through the vagina.
2. Main cause
It is usually caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention (like a C-section). The pressure cuts off blood supply to tissue, causing it to die and form a hole.
3. Where it is most common?
It is most prevalent in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, especially in rural or low-resource areas where access to skilled birth care is limited.
4. Impact on women
Beyond physical effects, it often leads to:
Chronic infections and sores
Infertility
Social stigma and isolation (many women are abandoned or excluded from their communities)
Mental health struggles like depression
5. It is preventable and treatable
Prevention: Access to quality maternal healthcare, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric services
Treatment: Surgery can repair the fistula in many cases, though access to care is still limited in some regions.
