@VerhofstadtQ It’s not 40yr olds kicking up a fuss. It’s those in their 20s or early 30s. The 40yr olds are just getting on with it, as always, knowing which ever way this goes we’ll be the ones to get screwed both ways.

Further to the pensions argument this morning: I take some comfort from knowing that whilst I may lose some of my expected state pension, the people 30 years my younger, who are happy with my situation, will probably get fuck all when they hit 70 and beyond. They deserve it.

@Oldgrumpytyke @SandyofSuffolk You do know there are some valid points that are being made right? For example since the 90s the tax burden has risen by an extra 10%. Rent has doubled as a share of income. Goods like cloths might be cheaper but they are of lower quality so need replacing more often.

The younger generation haven't thought this one through: "Sell your 3 bed house grandma, buy a studio flat and live off the sale proceeds instead of getting a state pension". Then young entitled grandson won't inherit his grandma's half a million pound house but a grotty fifty grand flat that he can't sell but is liable for the huge monthly management fees. And grandma has spent all the sale proceeds of her big house. It's called karma. 😜🤣

@LeeSmith8p @Landeur Men usually die earlier so you end up with the wife living on £1k a month which is nowhere near enough. It’s a little more nuanced though. Live in a council house and all costs are covered, live in your own home and you’ve got all the repair costs. Feckless win again.

@AvengingJester @Landeur Fair point, i think the good faith argument here is that for the majority of pensioners who have paid off their mortgage, 2K a month shared between two is more than enough to pay for essentials. Luxuries should be funded by private savings or children. No need for triple lock.

By your own admission, pensioners are wealthy. Young people are struggling enormously, yet you'd demand we continue to pay for your pension triple lock. Interesting.
M@arthur_mp

@Landeur Moron, the pensioners have the cash to spend on goods and services. They eat in restaurants annd go to the movies. They buy toys for their grandchildren.

@LeeSmith8p @Landeur For most women what I set out was the expected norm ie part time or low wage work. Clearly there will be women who either broke the mould or were ahead of the curve, especially if they were part of the 5-10% of people to have gone to a grammar school.

@Wiltsman6060842 @Theorised The problem is it’s a Ponzi scheme. It needs to go because it’s unsustainable, but people are looking for a nuclear option to the solution when a gradual winding up using different methods would work (ie buying people out, using North Sea oil for a moderate wealth fund + more)

@Theorised OAPs pay tax . Everybody pays tax. Lots of different ones. The state pension needs protecting not attacking, for old and young alike.

@twocultures13 @AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit If the war had been pushed by Israel (as seems the case to many, I lean that way but wouldn’t commit to it as a given) then whoever was in power the Iran war would have happened.

@AvengingJester @AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit I think if you have dems in the white house despite those things the alliance would have remained. It’s just not on the same level as actively seeing the EU + UK as hostile and literally starting a war with Iran

@twocultures13 @AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit Biden pulled out of Afghanistan without giving allies the heads up while also gifting the enemy some nice tech. Biden was also president when Nordstream was blown up. That, the Iran situation and Euro leaders being morons has caused the energy issue in Europe.

@AvengingJester @AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit I’m not saying we shouldn’t be allies but that a rebalancing is necessary. Implicit in my point is that you could not say the same about the forces that elected Biden. Seems clear to me democrats of pretty much any stripe would be a fairly reliable NATO ally

@acarlislewrites @Landeur Luxuries also had manufactured obsolescence built in. Tech is an obvious one, but (particularly) white goods and clothes are less durable. So cheap, but you buy twice or three times over the same time span.

Doesn't take into account tax rates which are higher today, but the point is pretty stark nonetheless. We live in an era of unprecedented technology, which makes our lives better than boomers in many respects. But in terms of the basic need of housing it is much, much, worse.

@Landeur Note in the 80s both parties wouldn’t have parity in earnings. The wife would likely be part time / low paid as they weren’t expected to be bread winners but housewives. Women entering the jobs market in the 80s had better prospects, the 90s was the decade of prospect parity

@twocultures13 @AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit You could say the same about the forces that elected Biden. The fact is being an ally is a mutual agreement, as it stands it’s not mutual depending on what you focus on (be it military or economic).

@AaronBastani @JohnHundeslit And the forces that elected Trump have not disappeared. While I do think once he goes the right temporarily falls apart, they will regroup. Trump is the avatar of a movement and that is not going anywhere

@BoobooPriestess @Landeur No worries. There’s defo some bad actors, on both sides, knocking about. Hopefully people will eventually realise this situation can be dealt with fairly for all (ie everyone loses a manageable bit).

@jone45619 No. The problem is the existing liability. The payments are still needed, but we need to offer a way to get them to not take up the pension. Massive discount (£250k) on a house would do it - that’s a £606k liability in 30yrs time.

Pensions hmmm divisive it seems. So what if people under a certain age can opt out of NI pay into what they want. But if they need benefits they can't claim them. Does that work?

@AvengingJester @Landeur Means tested. How do you think farmers who inherited farmland, that they use to produce the food you eat, and people inheriting listed buildings they can't afford to live in, or maintain, will fare?

@Landeur Means tested on the way in Means tested on the way out The only people to benefit are the work shy and feckless. There are better/fairer options. Ie the gov. Does equity release. On death they sell the house but young can sacrifice their state pension for much lower sale price

I agree, not all pensioners are wealthy. However, 1/4 live in a home worth >1m GBP, so perhaps it's time we looked at means-testing rather than triple locking and obliterating the youth. As well as just never-ending immigration to keep the Ponzi going. I'm actually not too worried because this is all going to collapse very soon anyway, it's a problem which will be forcibly resolved, but it will hurt many English pensioners who are vulnerable and I find that quite a shame.

- Pull out of NATO. - Close all bases and remove all military personal from the UK, Germany, Spain, and France. - Never protect these countries again. - Stop all trade with these countries. ZERO. - Refuse to share any military technologies and don't allow to them to buy any military equipment. Ever. - Don't share any intelligence with them. NONE. - Tell them they have to provide 100% of weapons and money to Ukraine. - Cut them off completely.
