In just a few hours, I’ll be participating in a Heritage Auctions sale and bid for a Kostabi masterpiece painting. If I win this piece, it will arrive with the official auction catalogue but without a separate authentication certificate from the artist. In the international market, especially with major houses like Sotheby’s or Christie’s, the catalogue itself serves as the primary authentication and carries significant weight. (Even something like their high-profile “Beasts” sales functions that way for many buyers.) That’s standard practice globally and generally accepted. However, in Italy it’s a different story: without a dedicated COA (Certificate of Authenticity) directly from the artist or their foundation, the work can lose a substantial part of its value on the local market — sometimes dramatically so.
