Análisis personal: Entiendo que han sido 26 años de una narco-dictadura sanguinaria, que estamos viendo la luz al final del túnel y queremos que todo termine ya, las declaraciones de Donald Trump con respecto a Maria Corina Machado no han gustado o no terminan de convencer. Pero si se analiza la situación con mente fría seria lo ideal. El poder de MCM es la aprobación de la población, no controla ningún poder de fuerza, sea policial o militar, ni hablar de los colectivos. In 1977, NASA gave the astronomer Carl Sagan nine months to sum up humanity for any aliens who might one day find the spacecraft. He pulled together a small team to make a gold-plated record. They chose 116 photos, greetings spoken in 55 languages, 90 minutes of music from around the world, and an audio essay of Earth sounds including a kiss, a baby’s first cry, thunder, and whale songs from 1970. One member of the team was Ann Druyan, the 27-year-old creative director. She had an idea: put a person’s brain waves on the disc. Maybe in a few million years, an advanced civilization could turn the electrical patterns back into thoughts. The team liked it and volunteered her. Two days before her recording, Sagan called to talk about the project. By the end of that phone call, they were engaged. They had been friends and colleagues for years. It happened in one conversation. She showed up at the hospital on June 3, 1977. Doctors wired her to a machine that measures brain activity and asked her to think about Earth’s history and the future of humanity. She tried. But she was mostly thinking about Carl. About what being in love feels like. Voyager 1 launched three months later. She and Sagan married in 1981 and stayed together until he died in 1996. She is 76 now and still works on space communication. An hour of her brain waves, compressed into one minute of audio, is now 16 billion miles from Earth. It will be there long after every city we’ve built has crumbled and every species walking the planet right now is gone. In about 40,000 years, it will drift close to a small star called Gliese 445. Whatever happens to us here, that one minute of a young woman falling in love will still be out there.

In November, a NASA spacecraft that has been drifting through space since 1977 will be so far from Earth that light itself takes a full day to reach it. Send it a message on Monday morning, you won't hear back until Wednesday. It's called Voyager 1. For more than 45 years it has been gliding at 38,000 miles an hour on a straight line out of our solar system. It has not adjusted course since 1980. Every year it loses about 4 watts of power from the small chunks of plutonium that keep it warm and transmitting. It's like your phone's battery shrinking a little each year, except the spacecraft weighs as much as a small car and nobody can walk over to plug it in. The whole spacecraft runs on 69KB of computer memory. That is less than a single photo on your phone, and its signal home crawls back at 160 bits per second, slower than dial-up internet from the 1990s. A modern smartphone has roughly 175,000 times more memory than the computer that left Earth before most people alive today were born. NASA built it to last five years. The original mission ended at Saturn in 1980. Everything after that, leaving our solar system in 2012 to become the most distant object humanity has ever built, was a bonus. The plutonium core will probably run out around 2036. That gives us maybe a decade of data from a place no other machine will reach in our lifetime. Then the radio goes quiet for good. Bolted to its side is a gold-plated copper disc carrying 116 images, 90 minutes of music from around the world, natural sounds of Earth, and greetings in 55 languages. In about 40,000 years it will drift within 1.6 light-years of a small red star called Gliese 445. If anyone ever finds it, nobody we know will be alive to hear about it.
