Ethiopia has welcomed the repatriation of a significant 19th-century gold hairpin that once belonged to Empress Tiruwork Wube, the wife of Emperor Tewodros II. This elegant artifact, featuring intricate filigree work, dangling chains, and decorative elements typical of imperial Ethiopian craftsmanship, was looted during the British expedition to Magdala in 1868. Following the defeat of Emperor Tewodros's forces, many personal items from the imperial family, including belongings of the Empress who passed away shortly afterward, were taken away and ended up in private collections abroad for over 150 years. The successful return of the hairpin was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Royal Ethiopian Trust, Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie, and social development consultant Dr. Alula Pankhurst, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Heritage Authority. The piece, which had appeared at an auction in Rome, was acquired with donor support and formally handed over for permanent housing at the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. It will be displayed alongside other recently repatriated items, allowing Ethiopians and visitors to appreciate this rare link to the country's imperial history. This repatriation represents a meaningful step in recovering dispersed cultural heritage through dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.
